Long Branch Beach Replenishment Begins Nov. 19

By Christopher Sheldon

The Long Branch beach replenishment project will begin on Nov. 19.

The work will begin at Pier Village and make its way north to the Long Branch-Monmouth Beach border. The work will then run from Lake Takanassee north to Pier Village.

Congressman Frank Pallone said the work could be completed around spring 2014, but that the exact date is not clear.

The $40 million project will be federally funded and will pump 3.3 million cubic yards of sand onto the city's beaches. Col. Paul Owen of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which is performing the replenishment, said Long Branch's beaches will be about 250 feet wide once the work is completed.

"We're putting back a lot more sand than what was lost in Sandy," Owen said.

Owen said about 1 million cubic yards were lost as a result of last year's hurricane.

The work will be done by Manson Construction which will be using the largest hopper dredge in the United States.
