West Long Branch Police Say Phone Scam Could Return

Police tell residents to ignore or block the number 317-215-5328

  The West Long Branch Police say a phone scam that plagued residents in the past could returning again soon. In this particular scam, an automated message attempts to solicit credit card and bank account information from residents. Capt. Mihlon originally warned residents of the scam last May after there were several reports of it happening in the borough. West Long Branch Police Capt. Larry Mihlon said the calls have been originating from 317-215-5328. "An automated message claims that an account has been compromised and attempts to get the victim to ultimately provide their bank or credit card information," Capt. Mihlon said.   Capt. I got a similar call from 214-232-0615 and it said the same thing. It was a pre-recorded message I was told my debit card was locked and I should call this number to resolve the problem. I knew it was a scam right away because I just withdrew money from the ATM machine and I did not have any problem. Instead, I looked up the phone number online and guess what? West Long Branch Police Warn Residents of Latest Phone Scam

Scammers claim to be law enforcement officials

West Long Branch Police are warning residents of a new phone scam. "Several area residents have been scammed out of thousands of dollars," the police state on their Facebook page. "To prevent this, simply do not send money (Western Union, etc.) to anyone you don't know." The police state the scammer identifies himself as a law enforcement or government official who claims to have a family member in need of money for either bail, airline tickets or various other reasons. "Sometimes even an accomplice will get on the phone claiming to be the family member in need, tugging on your heart strings," the police state. "Any real government agency will understand the need for verification of identity and allow either a call back or some other means…

This scam started out a long time ago and even when we think it's become obvious and nobody's gonna fall for it anymore, there are still a few who fall for the trick.
