Sandy Cleanup Worker Dies After Being Hit by Car in Brick

Princeton Avenue accident that killed Long Branch man is under investigation

A Long Branch man working in Brick to clean up debris left by Superstorm Sandy was struck and killed by a car Friday morning on Princeton Avenue, police said. The accident occurred at about 8:20 a.m. Friday, as Paul Friedauer, 69, entered the roadway approximately 1,200 feet west of Beaver Dam Road to stop traffic as cleanup operations continued, said Brick Police Sgt. David Bedrosian. He was struck by 2004 Nissan Pathfinder SUV being driven by Karl P. Scheufler, 42, of Brick. Friedauer – who was working for the Glenside Equipment Company of Jackson – was propelled 125 feet due to the impact of the crash. A family hoisted up in the bucket of a front loader gave a quick wave to neighbors after they were whisked from their home on Port Road. A few blocks away, two men in a kayak – with a small puppy in tow – had just escaped flood waters the old fashioned way: paddling out. Those types of stories played out over and over again Tuesday in Brick, where flooding barely receded after a wall of water came onshore in the hours following the landfall of Hurricane Sandy Monday night. Local Schools Can Allow Home-Schooled Students To Play Sports

NJSIAA decision paves the way for home-schooled students to participate

Local public school districts must develop a policy if they choose to allow home-schooled students to participate in district sports, according to the state scholastic sports governing body. On Nov. 9, the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association made an about-face on a previous, long-standing policy that disallowed homeschooled students from participating in scholastic sports programs run out of their home districts. However, the choice rests with the local district. They are not mandated to allow home-schooled students to participate but must develop guidelines for their participation if they do.
