State Urges Preparations for Major Coastal Storm to Impact New Jersey

Tonight's commute will be "treacherous," says state Police and Emergency Management

The New Jersey Office of Emergency Management, in coordination with the National Weather Service, is monitoring a major coastal storm expected to impact the state today and tomorrow.   State emergency management officials anticipate coastal flooding, high wind conditions, snow, sleet, and even blizzard conditions in the northeast corner of the state, according to a prepared statement from state Emergency Management.   The State Emergency Operations Center in West Trenton will be activated at 7 a.m. today, and will remain open as long as necessary to meet anticipated challenging conditions. UPDATE: Locust Avenue Reopened in West Long Branch, Power Restored in Eatontown

Broken utility pole on Locust Avenue stabilized

A pole that was broken by high winds earlier today on Locust Avenue in West Long Branch has been stabilized. The West Long Branch Police reported earlier that the pole caused the road to be closed between Maryland Avenue and Parker Road. As of 2:15 p.m., the road has been reopened. Police say the replacement of the pole will be done at an a later date. Just over 100 people were without power in West Long Branch earlier today, but there are no reported outages as of 2:45 p.m., according to Jersey Central Power and Light (JCP&L). Police say the Betty McElmon Elementary School and Frank Antonides School did not suffer any loss of power. JCP&L also is reporting that less than five Eatontown residents are now without power. HURRICANE SANDY: JCP&L Says it Learned From Its Mistakes

Stresses storm may knock out power for 7-10 days

  Jersey Central Power and Light (JCP&L) President Don Lynch says the company has learned from the mistakes it made from Hurricane Irene and is ready for Hurricane Sandy and the threat it poses to the state. The company took heat when Hurricane Irene left many New Jersey towns without power for days - and, in some cases, weeks. Many thought JCP&L's response was too slow. The biggest lesson learned is getting the information out to customers and municipalities as specifically, quickly and often as possible, Lynch said. The company wants its customers to know as much information as possible, he said. Tornado Watch in Effect For Monmouth County

Moderate risk for tornado development between 1 and 8 p.m. Wednesday, according to National Weather Service.

Hang on to your hat and keep an eye in the sky, as the National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for much of the Eastern Seaboard, including Monmouth County, through 8 p.m. Wednesday night. Tornado Watch 411, issued by the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., warns of a moderate risk of tornadoes, hail up to 2 inches in diameter, thunderstorm wind gusts up to 70 mph, and dangerous lightning. There is a 40 percent probability of two or more tornadoes, and a 20 percent chance of one or more strong (F2-F5) tornadoes forming. Showers and thunderstorms are likely to begin after 5 p.m., with a 60 percent chance of precipitation, including hail. NWS is urging people to remain vigilant and listen to NOAA …
