Both schools lost 8 days because of storm
The Shore Regional and West Long Branch School District calendars have been revised because of the days lost to Hurricane Sandy. Both schools were closed for eight days because of the October storm and the schedules have been adjusted accordingly. Graduation remains on track for June 25 for West Long Branch and June 28 for Shore Regional, as originally scheduled. However, both schools will now be open on Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 21, and Presidents' Day, Feb. 18. There are two built-in snow days on both school calendars, as the state mandates 180 instructional school days. Both schools are now scheduled for 182 instructional days. Districts still exploring possibility of sharing a superintendent and business administrator
There is still a chance West Long Branch School District students will have a new superintendent this school year. After initially deciding against shared services this year, the West Long Branch Board of Education (BOE) will again explore the possibility at its next meeting. West Long Branch School District Interim Superintendent/Business Administrator Herbert Massa said the board will discuss the possibility of sharing a business administrator and superintendent with Shore Regional at the next board meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 28 at 6 p.m. Massa said he does not know decision the board will make but said that members of the Shore Regional BOE will be on hand as well as the county superintendent. Districts will also not share business administrator
Shore Regional High School and the West Long Branch School District will not be sharing a superintendent this school year, even after a recent feasibility study advised the schools to do so. West Long Branch Interim Superintendent and Business Administrator Herbert Massa said the districts have not completely ruled out the idea of doing so. "When you hire a superintendent, you have to hire them for a minimum of three years," Massa said on Tuesday. "What the district can do, is after a year go back to Shore and discuss the possibility of sharing a superintendent." West Long Branch Board of Education unanimously agreed to move school elections to November.
The West Long Branch School District has joined the long list of schools that have chosen to move their school elections to November. The Long Branch School District choose move its elections last week, as did Shore Regional. "All of the school district seems to be going in this direction," West Long Branch School District Interim Superintendent Herbert Massa said this week. The West Long Branch Board of Education (BOE) unanimously passed a resolution to move the elections this week. Massa said the move will save $7,000 for the district, because it will not have to provide its own voting machines and personnel to run them. Schools will wait for feasibility study to be performed
The possibility of sharing a superintendent between Shore Regional and the West Long Branch is becoming closer to a reality. The school districts, along with some representatives from the Oceanport School District, held a joint meeting at the Betty McElmon Elementary School on Tuesday night to discuss their thoughts on the possible shared service. The West Long Branch and Shore Regional boards agreed that if they are going to share a superintendent, they would also share a business administrator and a director of special services.
