Borough also names new police captain
Lawrence Mihlon was promoted from captain to chief of the West Long Branch Police Department on Wednesday night. Mihlon replaces Arthur Cosentino, who served as a police officer for the borough for 37 years. Paul Habermann was sworn in as the department's new captain after serving as lieutenant since November, 2011. The borough also appointed a new patrolman in officer Ryan Buck.

Building was also home to borough construction department
The former home of the West Long Branch Police Department is set to be demolished. The West Long Branch Borough Council approved the demolition of the building at 95 Poplar Avenue this month, and the work is expected to begin next year. The library and community center located in the same complex will remain, but the rooms that housed the borough's police and construction departments will be demolished. West Long Branch Clerk Lori Cole said the borough is still waiting for a proposal from the architect who conducted a feasibility study on what should be done with the building. Further joint police services between boroughs in discussion; combining public works and building departments with other municipalities also in talking phase.
Oceanport is looking to expand on the number of services it shares with nearby communities, including the possibility of additional joint police services with West Long Branch. As Long Branch Patch reported, West Long Branch held a special executive session Tuesday to discuss a shared services proposal for the two police departments. The details of that proposal have not yet been publicly discussed, and Oceanport Mayor Michael Mahon stressed in a telephone conversation Wednesday that because contractual and personnel issues are involved, it is important for each municipality to keep the discussions confidential while they are in the talking phase.
