Monday's filing deadline for two seats on the West Long Branch Council sees the two Republican incumbents seeking re-election, and they face two Democratic challengers. Average homeowner will pay additional $89 in taxes
The West Long Branch Council introduced the 2013 budget on Wednesday night and a tax increase for residents is expected. The 2013 budget totals $10,203,966, a $17,416 increase from last year. The proposed municipal tax rate is 0.669, a 14 and a half cent increase over 2012. For the average borough home valued at $383,000, the tax increase would be an additional $89 for the year or about $7 monthly. Borough Chief Financial Officer Gail Watkins said the recently completed borough revaluation has skewed the tax rate numbers somewhat this year, and that the increase is actually smaller than it has been in past years. Council introduces ordinance that would allow use of cameras in borough
The West Long Branch Council is taking the necessary to steps to install red light cameras throughout the borough. The council introduced an ordinance on Wednesday night that would would allow it to put the project out for bid while other specifics, including the location of the cameras, will be determined later. A red light camera is a traffic enforcement camera that captures an image of a vehicle which has entered an intersection against a red traffic light. By automatically photographing vehicles that run red lights, the camera produces evidence that assists police departments in their enforcement of traffic laws. Monmouth University would be free to develop properties without variances
The West Long Branch Mayor and Council is speaking out against legislation that would exempt private universities and colleges, such as Monmouth University, from municipal zoning. The legislation, which passed the New Jersey Senate and is currently headed toward a hearing in the state Assembly, would allow universities to develop their property without getting variances from a town's zoning board of adjustment. West Long Branch Mayor Janet Tucci said she and the borough council oppose the legislation and the potential effect it would have on the borough. West Long Branch Council holds reorganization meeting
The West Long Branch Council held its annual reorganization meeting on Jan. 1 and Councilmen Christopher Neyhart and Fred Migliaccio were sworn in front of their friends and families. Councilman Migliaccio replaces Tom DeBruin who was elected to the council in 2005, but did not seek a third term on the dais. Councilman Neyhart will now serve his third term on the council. All six members of the West Long Branch Council, including newcomer Fred Migliaccio, who was elected on Tuesday night and received 1,032 votes. Council pitched idea at caucus meeting, Mayor Tucci says it's something 'to think about seriously'
The West Long Branch Borough Council at its meeting Wednesday heard a pitch from a local start-up business whose representatives said could take the burden of construction permit approvals off the municipality, not only saving the borough money, but also speeding up the permit process for its residents. Representatives from the company, Shrewsbury-based Municipal Code Compliance Agency, spent ten minutes pitching the council and mayor during Wednesday’s caucus meeting on the benefits of contracting a third party to handle the borough’s permit applications. Executive session meeting will be held with Oceanport Council
The West Long Branch and Oceanport councils will hold a joint meeting to discuss the possibility of sharing police services. The meeting is scheduled for Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at West Long Branch Borough Hall, and will be held in executive session. No action is expected to taken at the meeting. The West Long Branch Council held a similar meeting last month, but the Oceanport Council was not part of the meeting. The council and police department have not publicly discussed any details of the proposal. In May, the departments agreed to share police dispatch services, creating a joint savings of $1.3 million over the initial 5-year term, according to Oceanport Mayor Michael Mahon.
