Application will be concluded in May, board chair says.
Chabad of the Shore's application to build a synagogue in West End was scheduled to conclude on Monday night, but the Long Branch Zoning Board of Adjustment decided to finish the hearing at a future meeting. The final testimony was given on Monday night and the public started commenting, but the board usually does not let its meetings go later than 10 p.m., so the meeting was adjourned shortly after. "We will not conclude this tonight," Long Branch Zoning Board Chairwoman Terry Janeczek said. Janeczek said the earliest the application can be heard by the board is Monday, May 13, at 7 p.m., where it will be the lone agenda item. The public comments will continue and Chabad of the Shore's land-use attorney Robert Tripp and West End Business …

Ocean Avenue deli has been open for 15 years
Mike's West End Deli, a staple of West End, will close its doors on Jan. 1, 2013. The family-owned deli at 618 Ocean Ave. has been open for 15 years and has been serving arguably the best pork roll egg and cheese in the city, but will close due to "financial reasons," according to owner Mike Ioannides. "I accept it, but it has been hard especially with our customers," Ioannides said. Ioannides said many of his employees have been working at the deli since before he took over ownership eight years ago. He said he does not have an immediate plans to start a new business elsewhere but said it is not out of the question for the future. The building that currently houses Mike's West End Deli is part of Chabad of Shore's application to build a …

New stores open on Brighton Avenue
The storefronts on Brighton Avenue always appear to be changing, with the exception of a few longtime businesses. Stores come and go, but the spaces they leave are always quickly leased by another business owner looking to succeed in West End. Jack's Goal Line Stand, Scala's and Richard's Deli have been fixtures in the area for years, and newer success stories such as the Draft House and Bon Appetit do not appear to be going anywhere anytime soon. There are several new businesses in West End that have opened in the last few months, and only time will tell if they are successful and become fixtures in the community themselves. Heading east down Brighton Avenue, Crawford's Coffee Bar replaces Jesse's Cafe at 139 Brighton Ave. Jesse's Cafe …

Long Branch Zoning Board of Adjustment hears more testimony from rabbi
The public will have until next year to see the resolution of Chabad of the Shore's application to build a large synagogue and other space in West End. During Monday night's hearing on the application, Long Branch Zoning Board of Adjustment Chairwoman Terry Janeczek said the next time available to hear testimony would be January. Chabad wishes to build a 2-story building that contains a 200-seat sanctuary, a 200-person capacity multipurpose room with a kitchen on the second floor; and a five classrooms, office space and a room for religious services on the second floor. The plan would include the demolition of a old movie theater on Ocean Avenue and two stores north of the structure. A synagogue is not a permitted use in the commercial …

Hearing will continue Sept. 24
The Long Branch Zoning Board of Adjustment heard more testimony on Monday night, but did not reach a decision on a proposed plan to build a synagogue in West End. Chabad of the Shore wishes to build a 2-story building that contains a 200-seat sanctuary, a 200-person capacity multipurpose room with a kitchen on the second floor; and a five classrooms, office space and a room for religious services on the second floor. The plan would include the demolition of a old movie theater on Ocean Avenue and two stores north of the structure. A synagogue is not a permitted use in the commercial zone, so Chabad of the Shore is looking to obtain a use variance to use the site and also obtain some minor bulk variances for parking and setbacks. Chabad …

Long Branch Zoning Board to hear more testimony from Chabad of Shore
After almost three months, Chabad of the Shore's application before the Long Branch Zoning of Adjustment to build a synagogue in West End will continue tonight at 7 p.m. at Long Branch City Hall. Chabad's plan is to replace the old movie theatre near the corner of Brighton Avenue and Ocean Avenue, and the stores south of it, with a 2-story building that contains a 200-seat sanctuary, a 200-person capacity multipurpose room with a kitchen on the second floor; and a five classrooms, office space and a room for religious services on the second floor. A synagogue is not a permitted use in the commercial zone, so Chabad of the Shore is looking to obtain a use variance to use the site and also obtain some minor bulk variances for parking and …

Area was occupied by buildings destroyed in February fire
A large gap now exists in West End after a devastating fire destroyed three buildings on Brighton Avenue in February. Whatever was left of the buildings was quickly demolished and now a grass lot and a view of Montgomery Avenue is all that remains. The lot is bordered by The Lighthouse and East Coast Coin and Jewelry Exchange. Officials have said that at least one of the building owner has expressed his interest in rebuilding in the area, but there are currently no plans or applications before the Long Branch Planning or Zoning Board of Adjustment. So, Patch would like to know what readers would like to see built in the area. Would you like things to be built exactly the way they were, with apartments and various stores occupying the …

Applicant describes site plan, use of building
Chabad of the Shore, a non-profit Jewish organization, presented its application to demolish an old movie theater located in West End and build a synagogue and other space in its place during Monday night's Long Branch Zoning Board meeting. A decision was not reached in the case, but the public got its first chance to hear and see the proposed plan. A synagogue is not a permitted use in the commercial zone, so Chabad of the Shore is looking to obtain a use variance to use the site and also obtain some minor bulk variances for parking and setbacks. Rabbi Leibel Shapiro, of Chabad of the Shore, and the group's land-use attorney Robert Tripp, described many of the details of the project which would include the demolition of the theater on …

Synagogue would replace old movie theater on Ocean Avenue
A group will come before The Long Branch Zoning Board Monday night with an application that would replace the old movie theater on Ocean Avenue with a synagogue and Jewish community center. The theater, which is located near Lou's Uniforms and Ocean Cafe, was once one of the only of its kind in the area, and closed over 20 years ago. The entire blacktop area behind the theater and the neighboring buildings are considered part of the property and are part of the site plan. The blacktop area is currently used as a free parking area by residents who visit West End. Patch wrote a story asking viewers what should go on the site and what they thought about the application last month, and the response from the community was overwhelming. The …
