District hosting community brunch, tree lighting
The Long Branch School District will host two holiday-themed events this week for students and their families. The District Tree Lighting will be held on Dec. 18 at 5 p.m. on the campus of the district's two preschools. The activities will take place between the Joseph M. Ferraina Early Childhood Learning Center, 80 Avenel Blvd., and the Lenna W. Conrow School, 355 Long Branch Ave. Students will perform holiday songs and there will be train rides, bouncy rides, snacks and photos with Santa. The Community Holiday Brunch is set for Dec. 22 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Gregory Elementary School, 201 Monmouth Ave. The brunch is open to all Long Branch families and is a free event. The Christmas tree in front of county offices in Freehold Borough has been lit.
While the weather on Tuesday did not feel very Christmas like, Freehold Borough got into the holiday spirit with the lighting of the Christmas tree in front of the Hall of Records. Residents gathered outside the Hall of Records along with the Rock N Roll Chorus, radio personalities from the Breeze-FM and local elected officials to witness the town Christmas tree light up. The tree, decorated by Freehold Girl Scout Troop 2780 had a hurricane relief theme this year along with their traditional “green” ornaments. “There are a total of 300 ornaments on the tree this year,” said a Girl Scout Troop 2780 spokesperson. “The ornaments are all made from recycled materials and have a Hurricane Sandy theme to them. Tree lighting will be held on Nov. 27.
The end of one holiday will signal the beginning of another for Long Branch. The city's annual tree lighting ceremony will be held in Pier Village the weekend after Thanksgiving on Nov. 27 at 4:30 p.m. The entire community will be on hand in Festival Plaza to welcome the Christmas season and get people in the holiday spirit. Santa Claus will make an appearance and some of his favorite treats including hot chocolate and cookies will keep the crowd warm. Tim McLoone and the Shirleys will provide the musical entertainment for evening.
