The First Night of the Spelldown

The survivors will return to the competition tonight at Monmouth University.

One hundred champion spellers bravely took on some tricky spelling words last night at the annual Spelldown at Monmouth University, in the first of two nights of tense competition at the Pollak Theatre. Some of the students were eliminated on their second time at the microphone, thrown off by curveballs like belay (to secure a rope), babka (a Polish pastry) and oratorio (a musical) that left the audience clapping in empathy as they exited the stage and handed in the number strung around their necks. But more than half kept their ground, and will return tonight to battle for first place in the contest.  The winner will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee to be held May 29 to 31 in Washington D.C.  The final day is televised.  Last …

Old First United Methodist Church To Get Boost From Monmouth University Concert

Concert is scheduled Dec. 17 and will benefit local church restoration fund

Monmouth University is hosting a concert that will benefit the Old First United Methodist Church restoration fund on Dec. 17, at 4 p.m., at the Pollak Theatre. Tickets for the performance, which will include artists Jake Clemons, Woodfish and Jo Wymer, are $15 and can be ordered by calling 732-930-0466 or visiting www.outoforder.net. There will be a doo-wop set at 4 p.m. with the Shore Tones, Rock ‘n Rhythm, Sidewalk Serenade and The Del Angels. Ticket-holders can also bid on art pieces on display at the Art Walk outside the Pollak Theatre.  All proceeds from the art auction will benefit the Old First Methodist Church and exhibiting artists. Monmouth University Unveils Upcoming Slate of Met Opera Simulcasts

The Pollak Theatre at Monmouth University will once again be simulcasting Met Operas for the 2011-12 season.

Last year, one of the most popular continual events at Monmouth University were the live streaming of Metropolitan Opera House shows at the school over the course of the year. These operas were streamed live to the university and played over a projection screen, with patrons watching in a way like they would be watching a film in a movie theatre. This series of Metropolitan Opera streams was so popular that the university will once again be showing the opera over the course of the 2011-12 school year. Just recently, the West Long Branch school released the schedule of shows that will be shown at the Pollak Theatre. First to be shown will be a brand new production of the famed opera Anna Bolena, which was created by Gaetano Donizetti. This …
