Construction workers hit gas main causing leak
Pier Village has been reopened after a gas leak on Wednesday afternoon closed a portion of the shopping center. Long Branch Police Capt. Jason Roebuck said workers were doing construction toward the south end of the shopping area when they hit a gas main. The Long Branch Police Department, Fire Department and New Jersey Natural Gas arrived on the scene around 5 p.m. and fixed the leak.
Boardwalk now fully open to public
The boardwalk at Pier Village has been repaired and it is now fully accessible to the public. Construction began on Jan. 17 and took a little over a month to complete. Repairs includes concrete slope protection, railings, sand berm, landscaping and repair of the boardwalk's irrigation system. The Long Branch Council awarded a $194,380 contract to K.B.D. Construction LLC for the work in January. The Pier Village boardwalk was designed in a way that allowed the water to go underneath and then go back out to the ocean, so it was not as badly damaged as the boardwalk south of the Long Branch shopping center. Those repairs will be much more costly for the city, but FEMA is also expected to pay for the work. Officials have said the cost to …

Whatever one thinks of Pier Village, the taxes do not pay for LB's school system. Check out the sources of funding for the schools, and (within the portion of that revenue derived from local school property taxes) the percentage coming from Pier Village. Even with the taxes from Pier Village, LB still has an extremely high local school property tax rate and, generally, an extremely high property …   more ›

Pier Village restaurant reopens today
Avenue, one of Pier Village's three oceanfront restaurants that was damaged during Hurricane Sandy, will be reopening today and will be donating 10 percent of its sales to Jersey Shore charities through the end of the year. The restaurant, located at 23 Ocean Avenue, sustained over $100,000 in damage from Hurricane Sandy last month after high winds and water ripped through the building’s electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems, which are located on the bottom of the restaurant. Over $30,000 in food was lost to spoilage due to the absence of electricity for more than two weeks as well. “We worked around the clock to get the business back online for the past sixteen days,” General Manager Thierry Carrier said in a release to Patch. “We …
Three restaurants have been closed since Hurricane Sandy
The recovery for Pier Village in Long Branch has been quick, despite the damage some of its stores and restaurants sustained during Hurricane Sandy. Today will mark the first day when every restaurant and store will be open to the public, as Sirena, Avenue and McLoone's Pier House are reopening. The three restaurants lie directly on the boardwalk and suffered the most damage from the hurricane. Other stores such as the Aloha Grove and Koi Botique and restaurants such as Indulge and Turning Point reopened last week. They were able to open more quickly because they are located further west than Sirena, Avenue and McLoone's Pier House. The boardwalk in Pier Village survived the storm and is intact. The section of the boardwalk that lies …

Clean Ocean Action's twice-yearly event is in its 28th year and still welcoming volunteers young and old
Another summer has come and gone, filled with days of laughter, sunshine and relaxation at the beach. While the parties have gone, the reminders of them -- caps from water bottles and soda, straws from drinks, and hundreds of other bits of debris -- remain behind. This Saturday, hundreds of volunteers will be hitting the state's beaches from Sandy Hook to Cape May to pick up plastics, Styrofoam, cans and much more, left behind by humans and the tides, as part of Clean Ocean Action's fall Beach Sweeps event. In the Long Branch area, the Sweeps will be done at the Pier Village beach. Volunteers will meet at the beach entrance at Melrose Terrace and Ocean Avenue. Since the first sweeps in 1985, more than 90,000 volunteers have participated …
