Matter will be discussed during special executive session meeting Tuesday morning
The possibility of additional shared services between the West Long Branch and Oceanport police departments is being discussed by the borough council. The West Long Branch Council will hold a special meeting Tuesday morning where the matter will be discussed during executive session. The meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. Borough Clerk Lori Cole explained that there will be no action taken during the meeting and that the purpose of the meeting is strictly to discuss a "shared services proposal for the West Long Branch and Oceanport Police Departments." Barcus expressed gratitude for local cops and doctors who took care of him and said he'll likely take June 24 off in years to come
Oceanport Police Captain Dan Barcus was hesitant to have the spotlight on him as he returned to his post the Tuesday following a June 24 lightning strike that electrocuted him while attempting to close a gate at the intersection of Port Au Peck and Oceanport Avenues. "It's not about me," said Barcus in a telephone conversation Wednesday. "It's about the great cops and doctors who took great care of me." Speedy recovery expected for Captain Daniel W. Barcus, who was struck by lightning while closing a metal gate on Friday evening
Oceanport Police Captain Daniel W. Barcus is going to recover after getting struck by lightning while attempting to close a metal gate at the corner of Port Au Peck and Oceanport avenues on Friday. Barcus was taken by police cruiser to Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch after being struck around 6:30 p.m. on Friday, according to one media reporting service, which monitors local police and fire communications. Oceanport Councilman Joseph Irace sent an email at 9:39 p.m. on Friday saying early signs are positive Barcus will make a speedy recovery. "On behalf of the governing body, our prayers go out to him and his family and the Oceanport Police Department," Irace said.

Shared services agreement will cut dispatch costs 50 percent for both boroughs
The agreement to share police dispatch services between West Long Branch and Oceanport is now complete. West Long Branch Councilman Christopher Neyhart announced the completion of the merger during Wednesday's brief council meeting. West Long Branch Police Capt. Lawrence Mihlon has said dispatch services for both boroughs will be handled by the West Long Branch Police Department on Broadway. These guys put their lives on the line everytime they leave their homes..wether its stopping for a meal during day or closing a gate..the danger lurks everywhere and a cop has to be on all the time.
