Road is now one-way southbound from Melrose Terrace to North Bath Avenue
Long Branch's Ocean Avenue has been converted to a one-way street southbound from Melrose Terrace to North Bath Avenue. The city's boardwalk was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy and resulted in the loss of one of residents' favorite places to walk and jog. Long Branch Public Safety Director said the traffic pattern change will create a lane for people to safely perform recreational activities "This change will allow us to provide a place for the many pedestrians, both walker and runners, that utilize the beachfront on a daily basis to continue their daily routines," Roebuck said in an e-mail. "They have chosen to walk in the roadway, and we think this is a very unsafe condition, and we have started to look at it," Woolley said Long Branch Police Lt. Craig Spencer gave a presentation on a proposed, temporary change to the traffic pattern on Ocean Avenue and the installation of Jersey barriers to separate pedestrians and drivers. Save Ocean Avenue Committee recommends several improvements
The Save Ocean Avenue Committee is dedicated to making Ocean Avenue a jewel of the city and making improvements to the street. The non-profit group outlined its plans for Ocean Avenue during the final Long Branch Council meeting of 2011. One of the group's plans is already in the works as the council recently passed a bond ordinance that will improve the boardwalk from Morris Avenue to Brighton Avenue. The group was also like to finish painting historical postcard Long Branch art scenes on all boarwalk bathrooms. They would also like to put up story boards along the boardwalk that highlight the history of Long Branch and Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park. The committee was responsible for the boardwalk being renamed the Seven Presidents …
