Today we celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. and while most Long Branch-Eatontown area schools are open, and some of you may have the day off from work. In honor of this holiday, we thought we’d bring you five facts about Martin Luther King Jr.

While the nation remembers and recognizes the significance of the life of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, state, county and municipal offices are closed. Most Long Branch-Eatontown area schools, however, are open for a regular school session, to make up for the days lost to Hurricane Sandy in October and November.

Thursday is first day of events with Gospel Night
The life of Martin Luther King, Jr. will be celebrated with several events throughout Long Branch, beginning this Thursday night. The events will begin at Trinity A.M.E. Church, 66 Liberty St., which will host Gospel Night on Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. The night of worship will be hosted by the Rev. Norwood R. Cuff, pastor of Trinity A.M.E. Church. The second event is set for Friday, Jan. 18, when the Long Branch Portuguese Club, 191 Broadway, will once again be the place to chow down for the Martin Luther King Soul Food Dinner. The dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will feature music by D.J. Lonnie Rawls. The events will continue on Sunday, Jan. 20 with a Martin Luther King Ceremonial March at 2 p.m. Marchers will gather at Martin Luther King, Jr…

Gospel Night to be held at Trinity AME Church tonight
Martin Luther King Day gives people around the country an opportunity to remember the life of an extraordinary man.
