Eatontown No Longer Interested in Acquiring Fort Monmouth's Mallette Hall

Mayor Gerald Tarantolo "admits defeat" in attempt to acquire building as gift from FMERA

Eatontown is no longer pursuing the acquisition, renovation or purchase of Mallette Hall on the Fort Monmouth property. Eatontown Mayor Gerald Tarantolo had been pushing for Mallette Hall to be given to the borough as a gift for $1 from Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority (FMERA) and be used as the borough hall. On Wednesday night, Mayor Tarantolo officially ended his pursuit of the acquisition of the building. "To facilitate discussion tonight, I am admitting defeat in obtaining Mallette Hall as a gift and certainly do not recommend outright purchase," Mayor Tarantolo said in a prepared statement. "I was told by FMERA more recently that I should not be disappointed if the acquisition by gift is denied. The option to purchase…

Newest Report Shows Mallette Hall Revamp Would Still Cost Eatontown $15 Million

Mayor believes building should be given to the borough for free

Eatontown Mayor Gerald Tarantolo said he has a vision that the borough's new town hall will be located in Mallette Hall, a Fort Monmouth building that closed last year along with the Army base. Mayor Tarantolo said he believes the building should be given to the borough "as a gift from the federal government for $1," during Wednesday night's council meeting. The mayor has said the gift would be justified because of the costs Eatontown incurred for decades educating students from the fort. The borough hired architect architect Kevin Settembrino to perform an analysis of the cost to renovate the 60,000 square-foot Mallette Hall to a building that could house all of the borough's departments. Settembrino's report shows that the renovation …

Mallette Hall Revamp Could Cost Boro $15 Million

An architect hired to study the Fort Monmouth building for possible use by Eatontown Borough said overall the 59-year old building is in "good condition."

The Eatontown Borough Council learned on Wednesday that it could cost up to $15.5 million to renovate a Fort Monmouth building to use as a new municipal building. The mayor and council received an overview of a report by the architect hired to study the feasibility of converting the 60,000 square-foot Mallette Hall into a newborough hall. "I consider this a worst-case analysis," said Mayor Gerald Tarantolo, picking up the architect's report. Some of the biggest "drivers," according to architect Kevin Settembrino, whom the council approved to perform the analysis for $17,000 in August, include: The two-story building would also require new windows along a portion of the structure, retopping of the 200,000 square-foot parking lot and a new …

Of course, if Eatontown or redevelopers want to use Mallette Hall for anything other than a municipal center, it will require changes to the FMERPA reuse plan, which lists it as such. That will require a super majority vote of the FMERA board.   more ›

Eatontown Council Votes to Spend $17K for Analysis of Fort Building

Following months of debate, the borough council voted to pay an architect to determine the feasibility of moving municipal operations into Mallette Hall at the fort.

Eatontown officials voted on Wednesday to authorize an architect to perform an analysis of a proposed new site for municipal operations at a cost of $17,000 and, like same sex marriage and the debt ceiling, the issue divided politicans along party lines. Council members held fast to partisan notions with the three Republican councilmen voting against the proposal, saying it was a waste of taxpayers' money, and the three Democrat council members supporting the measure as an investment in the borough's future. Mayor Gerald Tarantolo, a Democrat and advocate of the measure, cast the deciding vote in its favor. "The free building has already cost us $17,000," said Councilman Mark Regan after voting against the proposal at the Aug. 10 council …

Cont'd from above: colonial architecture of the building itself blends in with the décor of the community. What better place to locate a town’s municipal building than adjacent to a church and a school on a thoroughfare whereby motorists passing through can know they are in Eatontown and where residents and taxpayers can have a sense of community because of the historic value of this structure? Eatontown Council Continues to Debate Municipal Space Needs

Borough officials continue to discuss whether there is a space issue and if a potentially free building on Fort Monmouth is the answer.

The Eatontown Borough Council will have some new material to add to the very old topic of municipal space needs, which once again sparked a round of debate at the July 13 meeting. Mayor Gerald Tarantolo received a memo late Wednesday afternoon from architect Kevin Settembrino of Buck Simpers Architect & Associates providing an estimate of $37,500 to perform a formal assessment of a potential new space for a municipal complex. The mayor and council agreed to postpone discussion of the issue, including whether a space issue exists and what to do about it, until the July 27 meeting to allow all members to read the Red Bank architect’s proposal. Tarantolo has made it clear on many occasions that he would like the borough to move municipal …
