Former Long Branch Superintendent Paid Over $600,000 In Unused Sick, Vacation Time

Records show Joseph Ferraina was paid $616,123 by the Long Branch School District for sick and vacation days.

Joseph Ferraina retired as Long Branch’s schools superintendent this year without getting a big check on his way out the door. There was no lump sum payment for unused sick days, nothing for accumulated vacation time. That’s because Ferraina had been cashing in his sick and vacation time long before he left the job. Over the past decade, Long Branch Public Schools paid Ferraina $616,123 for his sick and vacation days, according to data the district provided to LongBranchPatch.com through an Open Public Records Act request. In the past five years, the records indicate, Ferraina hardly took any time off. Instead, each year, he cashed in most of the 25 vacation days, 12 sick days and four personal days provided in his contract. On top of that…

I think some of these comments are downright hateful. Mr. Ferraina has always been 100% for the students and for the school. I know when I got really sick (like could have died) and was in the hospital, he came and visited me, and he did the same for a couple of other students. Long Branch School Year Kicks Off With New Initiatives

Superintendent hopes new technology, policies will help improve education

Long Branch School District Superintendent Michael Salvatore believes students are in store for great things for the 2011-12 school year. Between new teaching initiatives and increased use of technology, Salvatore said he wants students to "get excited about learning." On the third day of classes at the Amerigo A. Anastasia Elementary School, which encompasses children from Pre-K through fifth grade, teachers are making full use of the new initiatives and technology being implemented this year. Kindergarten teacher Betsy Keli, is back at the Anastasia School after teaching elsewhere for the last few years. Keli said she has been making use of a SMART Slate and SMART Board. Long Branch School District Names New Assistant Superintendent

Alvin Freeman moves up from position of Lead Principal of Long Branch High School to assume new role of assistant superintendent

The Long Branch School District has a new Assistant Superintendent in Alvin Freeman, who was sworn in during Wednesday night's board of of education meeting. Freeman has served as Lead Principal of Long Branch High School since 2006 and now takes over for Michael Salvatore who has moved on to the position of Superintendent of Schools. Freeman will have a salary of $133,000. “I am so excited to begin this new chapter in my life,” Freeman said. “I am very appreciative that the Board of Education has the confidence in me and is giving me this wonderful opportunity.” Freeman, 41, is a native of New Orleans and moved to New Jersey when he was nine years old.
