How Did Your Town's School Fare on its State Report Card?

State releases School Performance Reports focused on college and career readiness

The Department of Education released new School Performance Reports for all schools in the state for the 2012-13 school year last week. The reports include new data on college and career readiness and provide comparison to “peer schools” in order to provide a more complete picture of school performance for educators and the general public. In addition, the Department released the 2013 Taxpayers’ Guide to Education Spending to help New Jersey residents and interested citizens learn how their tax dollars are spent in their schools. “These new school performance reports were developed with the input of stakeholders across the state and provide a significant amount of new data to present a more complete picture of school performance,” …

Shore Regional and West Long Branch School District students will not be returning to school until Monday, Nov. 12 due to Hurricane Sandy's impact on the area. Sea Bright, one of the towns hit hardest by Sandy, Monmouth Beach, Oceanport and West Long Branch are sending districts for Shore Regional. The Long Branch School District will remain closed through Monday, Nov. 5 and the Eatontown School District will be closed through Nov. 6. "As soon as the streets are safe and power resumes we will communicate with you regarding school hours and openings," a message on the Long Branch School District web site states. "School …

School is first of the 2011 Capital Portfolio to enter the construction phase

Governor Chris Christie was on hand to commend the Long Branch School District and the city for groundbreaking of the George L. Catrambone School on Monday morning. The school is the first of the School Development Authority's (SDA) 2011 Capital Portfolio to enter the construction phase, with site work already completed. "With today's groundbreaking, this Administration is demonstrating its firm commitment to move forward with the construction of efficient and cost-effective school facilities that provide our students with modern and efficient learning environments," Christie said today. I agree with the sentiments, though I'd have turned different phrases. I hope for better in the future, but I think most of the same people - or their chosen successors - are still running things. The question remains: when will LB confront its educational failures? I've yet to hear anyone even acknowledge there are any problems. Money? It costs no more to have a proper curriculum. Indeed, the so…   more ›

Long Branch School Year Opens With New Programs, Policies

New parent portal, literacy program and teacher evaluation systems in place for 2012-13 school year

The Long Branch School District will have a bevy of new programs and polices for the 2012-13 school year and Long Branch School District Superintendent Michael Salvatore said he is excited about the possibilities. One new program is called Treasures, a literacy program for grades K-6. "The goal is to make learning more individualized and it's about engagement at the students' level," Salvatore said. "The teacher modifies it to fit their needs." Salvatore said standardized test results should not be the first indicators if a student is struggling and that the tests should "just be to confirm what you already know." The previous literacy program, Success for All, had been used by the district since 1999, but Salvatore said he was not …

I respectfully disagree with the Superintendent’s statement that SFA “was able to lift us from low proficiency to average rates.” As of 2010, the Long Branch Middle School was in its 6th year of failing to make adequate progress under federal standards; the High School was in its 8th year of failure; the entire District also failed to make adequate yearly progress. In 2010-2011, 19.3% of LB …   more ›

Morris Avenue School Redesign Finished in Time for Start of School Year

Project includes exterior and interior and upgrades to school

Students and parents who have not walked into the Morris Avenue School since the end of the last school year may not not recognize it when school reopens on Thursday. The pre-K to second grade school, located at 318 Morris Avenue, Long Branch, originally featured an open air, pod-style design, has been redesigned to make it more modern and to improve the learning experience for children. The project, which was completed on Aug. 24, transformed the school which now features separate classrooms and hallways. The former design featured four pods separated by dividers that contained four classrooms each. The classrooms were also given whiteboards, overheard projectors and cubby hole storage areas for children to place their belongings. "It's…

Long Branch School District Budget Approved, Shows Small Tax Increase

Total budget lower than 2011-12 budget

The Long Branch School Board of Education adopted its 2012-13 budget during Wednesday night's meeting, and, although the total budget has decreased, it still shows a tax increase. Long Branch Superintendent Michael Salvatore said he was happy with next school year's budget. "We have a budget decrease despite costs going up," Salvatore said. The 2012-13 budget totals $90,768,046 a $197,684 decrease from the current budget. Of that total, $32,186,556 will be raised by the local tax levy, a $615,000 increase from last year. The board was allowed to vote on and approve the budget without a public vote, because the total tax levy increase is below the state-mandated tax levy cap. Governor Chris Christie recently passed legislation this year …

Long Branch Schools See Dip in State Aid

Superintendent says he was "surprised" to see decrease

The Long Branch School District will see a decrease in state aid for the next school year. The district, which is classified as an Abbott District, will receive $41,795,235 for the 2012-13 season, a $100,229 decrease from the current school year's state aid allocation. Long Branch School District Superintendent Michael Salvatore said he was "surprised" to see the decrease. "(Governor Chris Christie) was so encouraging about the increase in state aid and the investment in children to secure a brighter future," Salvatore said in a statement. "Nonetheless, I was a bit surprised to see the dip in state aid to Long Branch as our enrollment increased along with our free and reduced lunch population." The district has 5,445 registered students …

I don't know why LB schools would continue or expect to get gov't aid. The ruling that created Abbott districts asserted that public primary and secondary education in poor communities throughout the state was unconstitutionally substandard. In LB they were because in order for the city to receive funding, it had to be run-down (or poor). Which LB was FOR YEARS after that huge fire on the …   more ›
