History of Monmouth Park Talk Set for Wednesday at Long Branch City Hall

Come learn about the Oceanport racetrack's illustrious past and get a glimpse of what's in store.

  Did you know that one of Monmouth Park's most famous box holders was President Ulysses S. Grant or that the infamous Boss Tweed sponsored purses? Learn more about the racetrack's Gilded Age heydey, its 53-year hiatus due to anti-gambling legislation and current plans in the works under new management on Wednesday at Long Branch City Hall. John Heims, director of media relations at Monmouth Park, will present "Monmouth Park : The Shore's Greatest Stretch Since 1870 " at 7:30 p.m. on April 25. The talk, sponsored by the Long Branch Historical Association, will highlight the rich history of one of the country's premiere racetracks at 344 Broadway, Long Branch, on the second floor. Long Branch City Hall Construction To Begin Next Week

Construction will temporarily close west side entrance of building

The entrance on the west side of Long Branch City Hall will be closed starting next week as crews begin to make improvements to the building. The work will begin on Monday, Oct. 17, according to Long Branch's Municipal web site. The work is not expected to be completed until the spring as the west side's main platform is reconstructed and a wheelchair lift is added. There is currently no handicap access on that side of the building, and these are the first of a group of handicap accessibility improvements that will be made by McCauley Construction Company Inc., of Hazlet. The Long Branch Council, during a September meeting, awarded a contract to the construction company for $489,000 to make changes on the east and west side of the building…

Council Awards Contract For City Hall Improvements

Improvements will be made to improve handicap access to city hall

The city has chosen which company will handle the improvements that will be to Long Branch City Hall. During Tuesday night's Long Branch Council meeting, a contract was awarded to McCauley Construction Company Inc., of Hazlet, for $489,000. The city's architect chose McCauley from a group of 8 bidders for the project. The purpose of the improvements is to make city hall more handicap accessible and to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. Project Architect Tom Besold explained that the existing ramp on the east side of the building is too steep, and doesn't comply to ADA standards. It will be fixed so that the slope is more gradual and easier for handicapped people to use it. He said the main platform on the west …

UPDATE: Long Branch Council Chambers Severely Damaged By Weekend Storm

The Aug. 23 council meeting could be moved to city hall conference room

The Long Branch Council Chambers have been severely damaged by the Sunday's heavy rain. The chambers, located on the second floor of Long Branch City Hall, were flooded over the weekend, and heavy water damage could be seen on the ceiling behind the council dais. Long Branch Business Administrator Howard Woolley said the water leaked down into several first floor offices including those of the tax assessor, health department and purchasing department. Woolley said the area of the roof above the council chambers and the roof drains will need to repaired, and that an insurance company was inspecting the damage on Thursday. He said the council chambers might not be reopened for another three to four weeks. City Clerk Kathy Schmelz said the …

Improvements Coming To Long Branch City Hall

Main improvements will be to make building more handicap accessible

Long Branch City Hall will be receiving some much-needed improvements soon. The purpose of the improvements is to make city hall more handicap accessible and to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. Project Architect Tom Besold, of Design Ideas Group, explained what improvements would be made to the building increase handicap accessibility, during Tuesday night's council meeting. Long Branch Council Meeting Hours Changing Next Month

Council meetings will now begin at 7:30 p.m.

Long Branch Council meetings could be starting a bit later as soon as next month. If the council passes a resolution at its next meeting on Aug. 9, regular council meetings will begin at 7:30 p.m.; 30 minutes later than their current start time. Workshop meetings would still begin at 6 p.m. The workshop meetings are the genesis of the council's discussions of moving the meeting time back a half hour. Council President Michael Sirianni said the meetings usually do not start until between 7 and 7:30 p.m., because the workshop meetings sometimes run long. The council also goes into executive session in the time between the workshop and regular meetings. At the Aug. 9 meeting, the council will vote on a resolution to change the start time of …
