Long Branch School Budget Adopted

Taxes will raise slightly as a result of budget

The Long Branch School District budget was adopted by the Long Branch Board of Education (BOE) on Thursday night. The 2013-14 budget totals $90,767,318 a $728 decrease from the current budget. Of that total, $33,391,044 will be raised by the local tax levy, a $1,204,488 increase from last year. The board was allowed to vote on and approve the budget without a public vote, because the total tax levy increase is below the state-mandated tax levy cap. Governor Chris Christie passed legislation last year that allows schools to do so. A Long Branch resident who owns a home valued at $475,000 would see a tax increase of about $70 next year. Long Branch BOE Reorganizes, Sets 2013 Meetings

The Long Branch Board of Education (BOE) held its annual reorganization earlier this month and elected a new president and vice president. The board members elected Tara Beams as board president and James N. Parnell as the vice president. The order of seniority for the 2013 Long Branch Board of Education is as follows: Tara Beams, President James N. Parnell, Vice President Mary L. George Lucille M. Perez Avery W. Long Branch BOE Members Not Among Those Who Did Not Complete Criminal Background Checks

Board members complete necessary background checks

  The members of the Long Branch Board of Education have complied with a new state law and are not in jeopardy of losing their positions. Over 350 New Jersey board of education members failed to complete a criminal background check, according to an Asbury Park Press article. Legislation passed last year states that board members who did not complete the criminal background checks by Dec. 31, would be required to resign or face criminal charges. Long Branch School District Public Information Officer Walter J. O'Neill said every board member completed their criminal background check.
