Steele Emerging as Monmouth's Best Player

Junior guard named NEC Player of the Week

Monmouth is a basketball team that has lacks stars and true go-to guy in criticial situations over the last few years. However, junior guard Jesse Steele is starting to emerge as an impact player for the Hawks, and he was rewarded for his recent hot streak by being named Choice Hotels/NEC Player of the Week on Monday. Steele averaged 19 in Monmouth's consecutive victories over Navy and Fordham last week, hitting 62 percent of his shots and 67 percent from 3-point range. He is leading the team in scoring with 11.3 points per game and also has a team-high 33 assists this season. Monmouth Basketball Wins in Home Opener

Hawks defeat Fordham 80-65

Five Hawks scored in double figures in Monmouth University's home-opening, 80-65 victory over Fordham on Saturday night. Monmouth (2-8) was led by Jesse Steele's 18 points, six assists and five rebounds as the team dominated the Rams (3-5) and never trailed after jumping out to a 12-0 lead early. Ed Waite had 14 points and eight rebounds, Dion Nesmith chipped in 12 points and a career-high eight rebounds, Austin Tillotson contributed a season-best 12 points and Mike Myers Keitt added 10 points. Saturday's contest was Monmouth's second consecutive victory, as the team continues to play it early season non-conference schedule.
