Lt. Governor Visits Gregory School in Long Branch

Kim Guadagno spoke to students about significance of Black History Month

Recognizing the contributions of African Americans to the nation’s culture and history, Acting Governor Kim Guadagno spoke to students at Long Branch’s Gregory School on Thursday on the significance and meaning of Black History Month. During her visit, the Acting Governor also presented the school with two banners from The King Center in Atlanta, Georgia. The banners, which celebrate the anniversary of the Martin Luther King, Jr. national holiday and Dr. King’s birthday, were presented to the school in recognition of the 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 50th Anniversary of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream Speech.” The Acting Governor will also present a set of banners during her visit to Martin Luther King Elementary …

Long Branch Housing Authority Hopes For Funding For Second Phase of Projects

LBHA will submit application for Gregory School and Woodrow Wilson projects

  Having secured funding for the first phase of two major projects, The Long Branch Housing Authority (LBHA) is now working on the next phase of the Woodrow Wilson and Gregory School housing projects. During Tuesday night's meeting, the Long Branch Council introduced an ordinance that will allow the LBHA to make payments in lieu of taxes for the second phase of the Woodrow Wilson apartments, because of the fact that the project project qualifies for a tax abatement under the Long Term Tax Exemption Law. LBHA Executive Director Tyrone Garrett said this is a necessary step for the authority's application with United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Gregory School Hosting Community Holiday Brunch

Event set for Friday, Dec. 23

The Long Branch Public School District is giving back to the community this holiday season. The district is hosting a community holiday brunch for all Long Branch families on Friday, Dec. 23, at the Gregory Elementary School, 201 Monmouth Avenue. The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. and run for two hours. The free event holiday brunch will include live music, a family-style meal, activities, arts and crafts, face painting and pictures with Santa. The afternoon's menu will unclude roasted turkey with gravy and cranberry sauce, homemade stuffing & mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, grilled chicken, penne vodka, pop corn chicken, macaroni & cheese, mixed greens with dressing, rolls & butter. Long Branch Housing Authority Projects Moving Forward

Housing Authority receives tax credit for Woodrow Wilson and Gregory School projects

The Long Branch Housing Authority (LBHA) recently received some great news from the state. LBHA Director Tyrone Garrett said the state Housing Mortgage and Financing Agency (HMFA) has granted the group tax credits to renovate the old Gregory School, at the corner of Seventh and Joline Avenues, turning it into a senior citizens apartment complex, and to demolish and reconstruct the Woodrow Wilson apartments, at Wardell Place. Garrett announced the news at a press conference on Monday morning at the authority headquarters at 2 Hope Lane, along with officials from Penrose Development, which will be handling Woodrow Wilson, and Conifer and Metro, which be handling the Gregory School construction. Long Branch School District Adding Solar Panels To Its Buildings

Gregory School already has panels in place on its roof

The Long Branch school district is looking to become more energy efficient and is currently outfitting its buildings with solar panels. "We are trying to, as a district, be more efficient with our utility consumption," Long Branch School District Superintendent Michael Salvatore said. Workers began installing solar panels on the roof of the Gregory School in late spring. "It didn't generate savings until August when they flipped the switch," Salvatore said. "It's a small site for solar, but when I saw the savings, I couldn't believe it." Salvatore said the school saw a $2,000 drop in its energy bill in August, 2011 compared to August, 2010. Housing Authority Plans To Turn Old Gregory School Into Senior Affordable Housing

Authority applying for funding to help finance cost of project

The Long Branch Housing Authority is looking to change something old into something new in the city. The LBHA is planning to convert the old Gregory School building at the corner of Seventh and Joline Avenues to senior affordable housing. The Gregory School has been vacant for years and a new one was constructed on Monmouth Avenue in 2007. The proposes project qualifies for a tax abatement under the Long Term Tax Exemption Law. The authority will make payments in lieu of taxes status for the project after the Long Branch Council approved an ordinance allowing this to occur last week. "It offsets the tax and would be to pay for the parcel of land and what you put on it," LBHA Executive Director Tyrone Garrett said this week. The authority's…

Long Branch Man Indicted for Trying To Sell Drugs Near Gregory School

Resident also charged with resisting arrest

A Long Branch man has been indicted by a Monmouth County Grand Jury for attempting to deal drugs near the Gregory School. Jamar Ousley, 28, of 7th Avenue, was indicted on July 13 for possession of more than 50 grams of marijuana and intent to distribute. The indictment states that on April 8, Ousley possessed the marijuana within 1,000 feet of the Gregory School on Monmouth Avenue and within 500 feet of the public housing authority on Hope Lane. Both are considered separate offenses and are third and second degree crimes, respectively. Ousley was also indicted for resisting arrest on April 8.
