Aerials Gymnastics, Rev. Benjamin Evans among honorees
A group of businesses and individuals were honored by the Eatontown Council during Wednesday night's meeting. Rev. Benjamin Evans of Mt. Zion AME Zion Church in Eatontown was given a proclamation for his work at the church and community service. Mayor Gerald Tarantolo also read the proclamation aloud for the audience. Rev. Evans has been with the church for seven years. Aerials Gymnastics, 151 Industrial Way, was recognized for yet another championship season and each member was given a certificate for their achievement. The team captured first place in each of their four qualifying meets and took home gold against 40 other teams at the State Championship meet in March for the fourth year in a row. Republicans Kevin Gonzalez and Richard Robinson file to run for election this year
Eatontown Council Democratic incumbents Jennifer Piazza and Meir Araman will be challenged by two Republicans who are looking to claim their seats on the dais this November. Republicans Kevin Gonzalez and newcomer Richard Robinson will be looking to join the Eatontown Council this fall. Gonzalez finished third in the voting for two seats on the Eatontown Council last November, and was not reelected. Candidates who wished to run in this year's election had to file with the Eatontown Borough Clerk by Monday.

Borough's ratables have been decreasing over last few years
Eatontown Mayor Gerald Tarantolo said the borough must start making some changes after the introduced municipal budget shows another tax increase for residents The 2013 budget totals $23,051,024, according to Borough Auditor Robert Oliwa, and is under the cap by $502,093. This represents a $447,830 increase over the 2012 budget. The amount to be raised by taxation is $15,459,728 and is under the allowable local property tax cap by $4,716. The amount to be raised by local taxes will increase 4.97 percent for a total of $732,305. The introduced tax rate will be 76.1 cents per $100 of assessed value, an increase of 5.5 cents over the 2012 tax rate of 70.6 cents, Oliwa said. Acquiring property would eliminate one of variances needed by applicant
The developer wishing to build a Wawa on Route 35 in Eatontown is now looking to acquire a small piece of borough property that will eliminate a variance needed in their application The applicant's attorney, Peter Falvo, told the Eatontown Council there is a "uniquely-shaped piece of property that happens to be a borough right-of-way," on the southwest corner of the property. "It's a sewer easement that serves the Brookwood development," Falvo said. "If we acquire it, it would eliminate our needed for a side yard setback variance." Falvo said one of the proposed uses of the site is a Chick-fil-A restaurant which would have a drive up window. He said a drive up window requires a 30-foot setback from the side property line. The developer seeking to convert Old Orchard Country Club into an age-restricted community on one side and a retail center on Route 36 is asking Eatontown to change the zoning designation for the area. Attorney Peter Falvo is representing Eatontown Ventures LLC, the contract purchasers of Old Orchard Country Club, located on Route 71 in Eatontown, and recently sent a letter to the Eatontown Council requesting the zoning change. Officials fear rental units will be added to Parcel B
With the news that the Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority (FMERA) is currently in the process of developing requests for proposal (RFPs) for Parcel B of the fort, the Eatontown Council has made it clear that they do not want rental units to be part of the plan. Parcel B is a 53-acre parcel of land that runs along Route 35 in Eatontown that is the future of home of 150,000 square feet of retail, restaurant, entertainment and 302 mixed-income apartments, according to the Fort Monmouth Reuse and Redevelopment Plan. The plan states that the apartments will be located above retail spaces and will also be three-story apartment buildings. Officials say track would also be used by Memorial School
Eatontown officials have expressed their desire to acquire the running track at Fort Monmouth for the borough. Councilman Dennis Connelly said the county was originally going to acquire the property, which is located off of Park Avenue, but is no longer interested. Connelly said he envisions sharing the property with Memorial School so its students could use the track and field for sports. Oceanport is in similar agreement
Eatontown has entered into an agreement with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to provide fire services for Hurricane Sandy-displaced Fort Monmouth residents. Oceanport has also signed the same agreement to provide fire services for temporary residents on its side of the property. The New Jersey State Police will provide police services and the Monmouth Ocean Hospital Service Corporation (MONOC) MONOC will provide first aid response, Eatontown Mayor Gerald Tarantolo said. Officials hope for grant money to help pay for improvements
It appears that changes are coming to the intersection of Parker Road and Wall Street in Eatontown. During Wednesday night's Eatontown Council meeting, Borough Engineer David Marks said changes are coming to the LGR complex, which houses Fortunoff and Macy's Furniture, which will be expanding its parking lot. The portion of Wall Street between the LGR Complex and the large shopping center that houses Best Buy was recently vacated by the borough. Half of the street belongs to the LGR Complex and the other half belongs to Best Buy. Marks said the intersection is in need of serious redesign now that the changes are coming.
