Changes Come To Long Branch's West End

New stores open on Brighton Avenue

The storefronts on Brighton Avenue always appear to be changing, with the exception of a few longtime businesses. Stores come and go, but the spaces they leave are always quickly leased by another business owner looking to succeed in West End. Jack's Goal Line Stand, Scala's and Richard's Deli have been fixtures in the area for years, and newer success stories such as the Draft House and Bon Appetit do not appear to be going anywhere anytime soon. There are several new businesses in West End that have opened in the last few months, and only time will tell if they are successful and become fixtures in the community themselves. Heading east down Brighton Avenue, Crawford's Coffee Bar replaces Jesse's Cafe at 139 Brighton Ave. Jesse's Cafe …

Good idea. The "Broadway Arts" planning concept may be too confined, geographically. The venues used for the annual Stratford (Ontario) Shakespeare Festival (which is not just Shakespeare by any means) are located all around the town - including a beautifully renovated movie theater and, if memory serves, a repurposed ice hockey rink as well as the main-stage Festival Theater (or is it Theatre?).   more ›

What Should Go Here? West End Lot in Long Branch

Area was occupied by buildings destroyed in February fire

A large gap now exists in West End after a devastating fire destroyed three buildings on Brighton Avenue in February. Whatever was left of the buildings was quickly demolished and now a grass lot and a view of Montgomery Avenue is all that remains. The lot is bordered by The Lighthouse and East Coast Coin and Jewelry Exchange. Officials have said that at least one of the building owner has expressed his interest in rebuilding in the area, but there are currently no plans or applications before the Long Branch Planning or Zoning Board of Adjustment. So, Patch would like to know what readers would like to see built in the area. Would you like things to be built exactly the way they were, with apartments and various stores occupying the …

Ciao Brings Authentic Italian Food To West End

New restaurant opened on Brighton Avenue in late November

There's just something about a home cooked Italian meal that makes you feel full and satisfied. That's the same feeling you will feel after dining at Ciao Ristorante, West End's newest restaurant, located at 75 A Brighton Ave. Ciao opened on Nov. 23, and held its grand opening on Dec. 2. Co-owner Mary Pat Marotta, whose husband Marc Marotta is the other co-owner and head chef, said the name of the restaurant is fitting because ciao means hello and goodbye. "It's goodbye to Florida and hello to New Jersey," Mary Pat said. Mary Pat and Marc opened and operated in Cibo in Fort Myers from 2004 to 2011, before selling the restaurant in May to move back to Long Branch to be closer to family and open Ciao. "We're both Jersey Shore kids, and we …

Local Businesses Brave Irene-Induced Blackout

Though the electricity is still out along Brighton Avenue in Long Branch, many local businesses are making the best of the bizarre situation.

For many in the local area, Hurricane Irene was one of the worst storms to have ever been witnessed. Homes were evacuated, trees were knocked down and power is still out for a myriad of neighborhoods. In Long Branch, many businesses are still feeling the effects of the storm.  Normally, one of the busiest streets in the city for local shops is Brighton Avenue. However, since the storm this past weekend, power has been out on this particular block. Not only are the stores without electricity, but also so are the traffic lights, meaning drivers going down Brighton Avenue cannot proceed straight and can only either make a left or right turn.  Many restaurants are closed as well during this storm, with places like Surf Taco and Scala’s …

The Slackers Get "Rude and Reckless" at Brighton Bar

Band on national tour, makes all-ages show stop at Brighton Friday

Celebrating 20 years of “slackdom,” The Slackers packed the Brighton Bar Friday night for their brand of ska, rocksteady and soul dubbed “Jamaican rock and roll.” Touring the nation in support of their new album, “The Great Rocksteady Swindle,” The Slackers treated the all-ages audience to a double encore set of their biggest hits, but also some surprise cover songs. The set included covers of the Misfits’ “Attitude,” Madonna’s “Like a Virgin,” Bon Jovi’s “Dead or Alive” and an instrumental rendition of Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine.” The band has a reputation for putting on a lively and entertaining show that keeps the audience dancing, and the West End venue performance kept that Slackers tradition alive. Opening for the band was …

Loris, that is what I was thinking as well. However, that is what it states on the flyer I got from Jesse's Cafe. It is in the same place that you are describing and the same place it has been for the last few years.   more ›

Art in the Park Showcases Some Unique Talents

Annual event held in West End Park in Long Branch on Sunday

The 13th Annual Art in the Park event once again triumphed in spreading art to the local community as well as kicking off the summer in fun and creative ways. The Long Branch Arts Council and the Long Branch Historical Association hosted the event at West End Park from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday at West End Park in Long Branch. This is the Long Branch Arts Council’s fourth year running the event.  Head coordinator Mare Akana said the council worked extremely hard updating the show for this year. "We want to promote and nurture artists," Akana said. Long Branch Historical Association volunteer Chris Crowder said the goal of their participation in Art in the Park is to spread the importance of the history of Long Branch while aiding in …
