How would you fill this retail space?
It's been months since Borders Books and Music closed its doors in Eatontown. The box store remains an empty shell on a busy section of Route 35. That got us to thinking about what might fill the void. A grocery store? Clothing retailer? A spa with free on-site childcare and built-in Starbucks? But enough about what we want. Borders Group announced Monday that it would begin liquidation by the end of the week.
The bins for $5.99 books outside the store and some deals on CDs by the registers are a small taste of the sales to come in the next few weeks as the Borders bookstore in Eatontown prepares to close its doors. Borders Group announced Monday it would close its almost 400 stores by September and begin liquidation by the end of the week. According to a manager of the Eatontown store, who did not give his name due to company policy, the liquidation process would begin this Friday or Saturday. He said that he and his approximately 20 fellow employees at the Eatontown store had not been given any additional information other than what had been released to shareholders Monday afternoon. The Eatontown Borders will close its doors by the end of September after a bid to keep the 40-year-old chain in operation fell through last week, according to the Associated Press. Borders Group, headquartered in Ann Arbor, MI, is seeking to liquidate its 399 stores, which could begin as early as Friday. The Eatontown location at Monmouth Plaza, at the corner of Route 35 North and Wyckoff Road, opened in March 2002.
