Governor on hand for first phase of boardwalk rebuild
Gov. Chris Christie and a host of elected officials stood amid a still recovering Ocean Avenue in Belmar Wednesday to kick off the rebuilding of the borough’s boardwalk 73 days after Hurricane Sandy. Flanked by Mayor Matthew Doherty and U.S. Reps. Chris Smith and Frank Pallone, Christie gave a decidedly upbeat speech to a crowd of more than 200 assembled in front of a massive pile driver as construction on the $6.6 million boardwalk commenced. Calling the Jersey Shore “the heartbeat of our state,’’ Christie said that Belmar was on the vanguard of shore towns rebuilding after the devastating storm. "Belmar is leading the way to recovery,'' Christie said. "Today is one of the great, great first moments of the rebuilding of our state, and, …

Gabrielle Hillman, 21, was a St. Rose graduate
A Belmar resident has been found dead in a dorm room at Delaware Valley College. Doylestown, Pa., police identified the student as Gabrielle Hillman, 21, a small animal science major, according to Doylestown-Buckingham-New Britain Patch. Police were called to South Hall on the Pennsylvania campus earlier this evening after Hillman's roommate found her body, Doylestown police Lt. Pat Penecale said. The Bucks County Coroner's Office removed the body from the scene around 6:40 p.m. Bucks County District Attorney David Heckler said Hillman's death does not appear to be related to a crime. "It’s not apparently criminal, at this time," Heckler said. The DA would not comment further on the cause or manner of death. Penecale said her death also …

Dempsey and Doherty say company cares more about profits than customers
As two northern New Jersey municipalities are asking the state for permission to switch from Jersey Central Power & Light to another electricity provider, the mayors of Manasquan and Belmar, whose residents are JCP&L customers, said they wished they could do the same. Last week, Robbinsville and Warren Township filed requests to the state Board of Public Utilities for permission to switch to Public Service Electric & Gas, while 14 other towns are also considering the same move, the Star Ledger reported Dec. 2. But both municipalities border the PSE&G grid and a portion of Robbinsville is already powered by the company, while Manasquan and Belmar are miles away. Both Manasquan Mayor George Dempsey and his Belmar counterpart Matthew Doherty …

The bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week. This closing comes in the wake of nearly eight months of continuous closure on the span. The bridge closed in October as the DOT began a multi-million dollar rehabilitation of the crossing's mechanical and electrical systems. Aside from a one day opening for the Belmar-Lake Como St. Patrick's Day Parade, the span remained closed until May. …
