Books donated to science university in Zimbabwe

Monmouth University’s School of Science employees, students, and alumni collected over 500 science books and have donated them to Zimbabwe.

The books will be sent to faculty and students at Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE).

Monmouth University chemistry professor Tsanangurayi Tongesayi started the project because of his strong ties with BUSE where he taught from its inception in 1996 through 2001 as the first lecturer and Chair in the Chemistry Department.

During a research trip to Zimbabwe this past summer, Tongesayi was stationed at BUSE and he conducted field research with BUSE faculty and students.

Tongesayi and chemistry students Lauren Lechner, Heather Siebert, Cathryn LaCanna, Arielle Lebeau, Christiana Brock, Chelsea Bray, Muhammad Ali, Sean Grimes, Patrick Fedick, and secretary Evelyn Hampton organized and packed the books for shipment to Zimbabwe.

"In the United States we take it for granted that our colleges and universities are well-stocked with books or that we have relatively easy access to e-references that we need, but for universities in developing countries access to current references in any form is a problem," said Dean of the School of Science Michael Palladino.  "We appreciate the great support and volunteerism of our campus community to help science and faculty colleagues at BUSE."
