Community Gardeners in Tinton Falls Harvest for First Market Day July 9

Volunteer gardeners at the Tinton Falls Community Garden harvested vegetables this weekend to sell at the season's first farmer's market on Saturday.

Master and volunteer gardeners at the Tinton Falls Community Garden began harvesting their produce on Saturday, a month after . The little agricultural haven behind the historic Crawford House yielded a crop of early summer vegetables including zucchini, cucumbers and lots of potatoes.

"Fresh potatoes are extraordinary. They're so much better than ones you buy in a store," said master gardener Geoff Bray, who spent the morning unearthing Yukon Golds he'd been growing for weeks. "It's like the difference between homemade tomato sauce and the stuff in a can."

This reporter can confirm that claim, after a large golden spud was given from the patch to Patch and enjoyed baked.

Beginning on July 9, the community gardeners will have a farm stand in front of the Crawford House on Tinton Avenue every Saturday morning from 9 to noon, with the proceeds going to the preservation of the historic building. All produce is organic and freshly harvested just before it's sold. Stop by early to get the top picks!
