Eatontown Farmers' Market Not Coming This Summer

Council says downtown event will probably be held in the fall.

It looks like the Downtown Business Association of Eatontown will have to wait until the fall to bring a farmers' market to the borough.

"It's not going to be realistic for this summer," Eatontown Council President Anthony Talerico said during Wednesday's council meeting.

Councilman Talerico said the interest from local farmers has been there but that there have been some "insurance hurdles," that will prevent it from beginning later this month as was originally discussed.

Downtown Business Association of Eatontown President Pamela Caputo back in May and said the market would be held in Wampum Memorial Park.

Caputo said having the market for six months would give the borough 10 points in the Sustainable Jersey program. Sustainable Jersey is a "certification program for  municipalities in New Jersey that want to go green, save money, and take steps to sustain their quality of life over the long term," according to the program's web site.

That likely will not happen this year as the getting all the necessary insurance for the event is taking time.

Councilman Talerico has supported the project from its inception and said the fall-themed farmers' market would still be a good event for the area. He said pumpkins and other autumnal fruits and vegetables would be sold during the event.

Councilman Talerico said he would keep the public updated on the status of the farmers' market at a future council meeting.
