Take Me Out to the Ballgame

Hundreds showed up for the opening day parade of the Tinton Falls Little League and Softball teams on April 2.

Hundreds of people gathered under sunny skies at Kiva Park on April 2 to kick off the beginning of baseball and softball season in Tinton Falls.

The day was marked with the traditional parade that worked its way from the park to the Hockhockson Park baseball fields. Players from the t-ball instructional league, girls’ softball and Little League--from tots through  the eighth grade--all participated in the annual event.

Each team proudly displayed a homemade banner during the parade and Mayor Michael Skudera presided over the annual banner competition.  After much deliberation, he awarded a $50 gift certificate to be used towards the teams' end-of-season party to the Little League's Mets and the National softball teams.

Eighth grader Emily Hauge sang the national anthem as the U.S. Marine Color Guard stood at attention on the pitcher’s mound.  Hauge has participated in school musicals but this was her debut singing the anthem at a sporting event.

Little League President Chris Pak then presented coach John Scrivanic with the banner from the NJ District 19 Championship 8-and-9 year-old team to mark his team's 2010 division win.

After the Little League Pledge was read by Paul Waraksa and the Parent’s Pledge was read by Vito Migliazza, the season was officially opened with the throwing of the first pitch.  The first baseball was thrown by Skudera and caught by 14-year-old Christian DeFazio.  The softball pitch was thrown by recreation superintendent Sherri Eisele and was caught by Jaiden Vendetti, 10, of the Mets.
