Subway Series: Eatontown Lions Beat Out Elks for Little League Championship
For the second year in a row, Eatontown's two teams in the District 19 Little League Junior League Division battled it out for the season's championship.
For the second year in a row, Eatontown's two boys baseball teams in the District 19 Little League Junior League Division met for the championship game on Saturday at 80 Acres Park. The Lions won 4-2, upsetting the Elks, who were last year's winners.
A double play by catcher Ross Spadavecchia, who tagged out a sliding runner at home and threw to third where Skylar Marvin tagged out another sliding runner, was one of the best baseball plays Elks coach Tom Blaney says he has ever seen. However, their bats could not keep up.
The Lions credited their win to a suicide squeeze pulled off by Paul Sandback in the bottom of the second, which gave them a quick two-run lead, and to consistent pitching by starter John Bonczyk. The team ended its season in first place with a 14-2 overall record.
