What Should Go Here? Old Star of the Sea Lyceum School in Long Branch

Long Branch Board of Education has been trying to sell property

The old Star of the Sea Lyceum School still sits vacant on the northeast corner of Third Avenue and Chelsea Avenue in Long Branch.

Long Branch School District Superintendent Michael Salvatore said the board of education (BOE) has been trying to sell the property for a number of years, but has been unsuccessful.

"We would like to use the sale for revenue for tax relief," Salvatore said.

The building previously served as an elementary school for the Star of the Sea Church, until it was closed in 1986 because of lack of attendance. The Long Branch BOE purchased the property in 1994.

It was built in 1900 but has many modern amenities including an auditorium and gym.

Chabad of the Shore, right down the street from the Hospital , the train station and Pier Village and they would not need a variance as it is already zoned for a nonprofit religous instituion.

Anybody know: (1) Why the LB BOE bought the building? (2) How much they - that's we, really - paid for it? (3) Why it has languished for a decade? (4) Whether the BOE ever used it for anything?

They should use it as a half way house. For state and federal prisoners. To make it easier for them to transition back into society.

A school. It should be a school. So sick of these buildings being abandoned and then new schools being built.

I think my church Searchlight Church would be amazing here and a blessing for many! I attended this school in 2000/2001 and feel what better thing to replace it than with an awesome church that reaches out to all the people of Long Branch and the surrounding communities!!!! searchlightchurch.com We have an awesome Pastoral team and great children's ministry and we originally started out in a L.B. public school but would love a FOREVER home where we can share GOD'S love!

At Searchlight Church we have an amazing youth group! The youth group has brought me closer to god and our youth pastor has helped me along the way. We do a lot of things for the community when it comes to helping people, like during the hurricane our church provided supplies and we also have yearly holiday events, like Easter egg searches, Trunk or Treat and Sunday with Santa! :)

This location is perfect for 'Searchlight Church'. The church continues to expand and potential members attend every week, so the extra space would be a great addition. With a permanent location Searchlight would prosper even more than they already have. Long Branch would benefit in so many ways if this building was used to permanently house the Searchlight Ministry.

Searchlight Church gives back to the community plenty and should be given an opportunity to purchase this property. It is an investment in the future of Longbranch!

I am a lifelong resident of Long Branch and a member of Searchlight Church. This spot would be a great location for Searchlight to continue to reach out to Long Branch and continue to spread the love within our community.

I have lived across from that building and could always see it as a church. I recommend search light church as they do so much for the city of Long Branch. They helped my family, friends, and the city as a unit during and after hurricane Sandy. Search light church is doing big and exciting things. A building of that size would only allow them to do even more.

What better way to help the community grow closer together than adding another Church? I believe Searchlight would do a PHENOMENAL job in this location!!! Let's make it happen!!!!!
