West Long Branch BOE Member Resigns Due To Health Reasons

BOE now looking to fill vacant seat

The (BOE) is looking to fill a vacant seat after board member Richard Santangelo resigned due to health reasons.

"He has health issues he has to look into," West Long Branch School District Interim Superintendent Herbert Massa said.

Massa said the board is now advertising to help find a candidate to fill the vacancy for the BOE, which now consists of eight members.

"People will send in letters of interest, we will review them and we will interview the candidates in public," Massa said.

Massa said he hopes to appoint a new board member at one of the BOE meetings in January, possibly the meeting on Jan. 24.

"We have to appoint a new member within 65 days or the board will lose the authority to make that appointment," he said.

He said the county would be forced to make the appointment if the board fails to name a candidate, but that he does not foresee that happening.

Massa said whomever is selected will serve until the BOE reorganizes in May, and they can then run for the unexpired term.

The school district's web site states those interesting in serving must apply on or before Jan. 3 by 3 p.m. A list of qualifications is also listed on the web site, which include being a resident of West Long Branch for at least one year and being registered to vote in the district.

Interested applicants should send their resumes and application letters to Herbert Massa, West Long Branch Public School, 135 Locust Ave., West Long Branch, NJ, 07764.
