Vetter School Fourth Graders Take History and Government Lessons to Town

The fourth grade class from Margaret L. Vetter Elementary School supplemented their lessons on Eatontown's history and government with a visit to the borough's center.

Fourth grade students from the Margaret L. Vetter Elementary School in Eatontown took their classroom out on the streets as they visited the borough hall, police station, fire house and Eatontown Historical Museum.

The field trip complements their current studies into Eatontown’s history and government.  They began their tour with a visit from Mayor Gerald Tarantolo who gave the children a short explanation of how local government works, how taxes are collected and used and what the closure of Fort Monmouth may mean for the local area.  The kids relished a chance to tour the committee meeting room behind the public meeting area and to take a quick peek at the mayor’s office.

Police officer Ryan Hennelly then gave the students a look at the communications room at the police station before they met with Police Chief Michael Goldfarb. Officer Hennelly then wow'ed the crowd by showing them his bullet proof vest and retractable baton. The kids also got a kick out of an up-close look at a police car.

The students moved on to the firehouse where they met Fire Department Treasurer and Fire Inspector Rudy Trask who gave them a close look at a firetruck. Former Fire Chief Ken Brand demonstrated the 70-odd pounds of equipment that firefighters wear while fighting a fire.

The students spent the remainder of the morning at the Eatontown Historical Museum where they turned cream into butter, washed clothes the old fashioned way and toured the museum.
