University to Assist Borough Police with Placement of New Antenna

At Wednesday's West Long Branch Borough Council meeting, the council members unanimously approved the placement of a new radio communications antenna on top of the Stafford Center at Monmouth University.

During Wednesday evening’s West Long Branch borough council meeting, the council members took steps to help fix a problem with the borough police department’s wireless radio communication, with assistance given by Monmouth University.

Recently, Mayor Janet W. Tucci noted, the West Long Branch Police Department, has had difficulty with sending and receiving wireless radio communication. This radio communication is quite important for the police to have, and the borough police needed the communication to be as clear as possible.

To alleviate this problem, the borough began to seek out prospective sites around the borough where a new antenna can be placed, thereby creating a better radio signal for the police department.

One location that was tested out for the antenna was the roof of the Rebecca Stafford Student Center, located right in the middle of Monmouth University. Police officers have already tested out the site, and it was determined that this would be a perfect location for the antenna to reside.

The student center is a building at Monmouth University that has several floors, with a Graduate Student Center in the first floor, a dining hall on the second floor and a computer lounge and conference room on the third floor. The building is located directly across from Woodrow Wilson Hall, and is close to the Multipurpose Activity Center and the university gymnasium and bookstore.

To assist the borough with this issue, the school is granting West Long Branch the right to place a VHF receive-only antenna on the roof of the student center, and additional installation of equipment on the third floor of the Stafford Student Center. This installation will occur without any cost to the borough.

Members of borough council noted they believed it was a great location for this antenna to be located to help with the radio communication for the borough police, and the resolution was unanimously approved by all of the council members.

The next West Long Branch Borough Council meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 15 at 8 p.m. in borough hall.
