Two Falcons Baseball Players Sign Letters of Intent

Monmouth Regional's spring sports teams prepare for the new season.

As the weather started to improve last week for the start of scrimmaging for the Falcons’ spring sports teams, many big announcements were made.

Danny Carroll, a shortstop for the Falcons, has signed his national letter of intent to play at Franklin Pierce University in New Hampshire, which is a Division II program and one of the top in the nation. He joins senior pitcher Bill VanMeerBeke, who signed with New Jersey Institute of Technology's Division I baseball program. They are the first two seniors from a very talented senior class of baseball players to move on to play in college.

Falcons’ varsity basketball forward Quaver Smith was awarded second team All-Division by the coaches of the B North Division. The 6’4” senior scored a season high 20 points on the Jan. 2 game against Red Bank Regional that helped the Falcons win the game 52-48.

Many of the captains for Monmouth’s spring varsity teams were chosen last week: seniors Danny Carroll, Max Schmardel, and Tom DenBleyker are the captains for the baseball team; seniors Haley Bowen and Tara Patti are the captains for the lacrosse team; seniors Nicki Mauro and Sam Carreta are the captains for the softball team; and senior Mike Brown is the captain for the golf team.

Last week, senior Stephanie Skove placed first in the pole-vaulting event at New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York City, jumping her season-high11' 8.5" to win the jump off. This is a huge accomplishment and she looks to lead the girls' track and field team at Monmouth this spring.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Coach Spampanato, who recently resigned as the head football coach at Monmouth Regional. Spampanato was the head coach all four years of my high school football career and all players who had the opportunity to play for him have found it to be an enjoyable life experience and fun to work as a team under him. I thank him for building the program, bringing us to the playoffs and giving us the opportunity to compete while enjoying the game of football and wish him luck in the future.
