Shore Regional Students Perform Well in HSPA

Students scores are higher than state averages in math and language arts

The Department of Education released report cards for each district in the state this week, revealing data that shows Shore Regional High School students performing better than their peers around the state in one standard assessment.

The reports showed that Shore Regional students scored higher than the state average in mathematics and language arts in the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA). The HSPA is a standardized test which is administered to high school students in March of their junior year.

Students are given a grade of partial proficiency (below average) proficiency (average) or advanced proficiency (above average).

In language arts, 72.6 percent of students were graded as proficient, compared to 69.3 percent on the statewide level. The percentage of advanced proficiency students also was higher than the state mark at 21.3 percent compared to 18.7 percent statewide.

In math, 69.5 percent of students were graded as proficient, compared to 50.7 percent at the statewide level. Students scored lower than their counterparts at the state level in advanced proficiency, with 17.7 percent at Shore Regional compared to the state percentage of 24.3.

Here are some more highlights of the school report card:

  • The length of a normal school day at Shore Regional was 6 hours and 55 minutes, while the state average was 6 hours and 53 minutes.
  • The amount of time per day full-time students engaged in instructional activities was 5 hours and 57 minutes, as opposed to the state average of 5 hours and 56 minutes.
  • The student/computer ratio at Shore Regional was 3.1, which was the state average.
  • The percentage of students with IEPs (Individualized Education Program) regardless of placement/programs was 11.9 percent.
  • Ninety-nine percent of Shore Regional students spoke English as their primary language at home. 0.6 percent spoke Portuguese and 0.1 percent spoke Spanish.
  • The percentage of students who entered and left Shore Regional during the school year was 4.2 percent. The state average was 9.7 percent.
  • The percentage of Shore Regional students who graduated by passing HSPA was 86.4 percent, while the state average was 82.5 percent.
  • Seventy-nine percent of Shore Regional students took the SATs, while the state average was 66 percent.
  • Twenty-five percent of Shore Regional students participated in Advanced Placement courses, while the state average was 19.9 percent. The number of AP test scores 3 or higher was 76 percent.
  • The percentage of Shore Regional students present on average each day was 96.5 percent. The state average was 94.6 percent.
  • The percentage of students in grades 9-12 who dropped out during the school year was 0. The state average was 1.7 percent.
  • The graduation rate of the Class of 2010 was 99.5 percent, while the state average was 94.7 percent.
  • The percentage of Shore Regional seniors who pursued a four-year college/university degree post-graduation was 64.4 percent.
  • The percentage of students who were suspended from Shore Regional during the school year was 3 percent, while the state average was 14 percent.
  • The total cost per pupil for the 2009-2010 school year was $20,343. The state average was $16,937.
