Shore Regional Registration in Progress

Students from Frank Antonides and other neighboring schools can now register to attend Shore Regional High School

Shore Regional High School recently kicked off its eighth grade registration interview program for the 2011-12 school year with students from Frank Antonides School.

The program is a collaborative undertaking between Shore Regional and local elementary schools. Parents are part of the interview process, which begins when packets of information are sent to them in advance of their visits. Typically, more than 200 students are interviewed each new year by Shore Regional counselors at the elementary schools they attend.

“The process works effectively and efficiently,” said Leonard Schnappauf, Shore Regional superintendent/principal. “The success is due in large measure thanks to the excellent collaboration of all the elementary schools. Students and parents meet with counselors in the comfortable, familiar settings of the elementary school each student attends."

“That means student time away from class in minimized," Schnappauf continued. "Parents do not have to pick up students and bring them to Shore Regional for the interviews. It all goes smoothly."

The current method of bringing the counselors to the student schools began several years ago, Schnappauf said.

“It was the result of our always looking for a better way to provide for the needs,” he said.  "Information sent home in advance helps.  Scheduling and coordinating student record for counselors' use is effective. Student time needed for the registration process is reduced significantly. And we can get it accomplished with less inconvenience for parents."

Shore Regional sounselors from the Personnel Services Organization travel to the elementary and middle schools. Schools included are West Long Branch’s Frank Antonides, Oceanport’s Maple Place School (which includes Sea Bright), Monmouth Beach, Deal, Seashore Country Day, St. Jerome’s, Rumson Country Day, Holy Cross, Oakhill Academy, the Hillel Academy of Monmouth County and the other academies.

Three Counselors went to Frank Antonides as the cycle began. That visit covers about one third of the total students.  Counselors Katherine Saxton, Maura O’Connor and Stefanie LeFurge were assisted with records coordination and schedule management by Lynda Chiafullo, administrative assistant to Director Jon Warner. (LeFurge helped out for regular FAS Counselor Kathleen Moretti who is on maternity leave.)

The Frank Antonides Media Center provided an excellent venue for the interviews, and the school's administrative members provided hands-on aid, as well.

Students have a common list of required subjects, including the usual:  English, physical education, and world cultures. They are required to complete two years of a world language: French, Latin, Italian or Spanish.

Electives include art, design, graphic arts, band, choir, journalism and more. Later visits by the athletics organization will aid students who have interests in high school sports. These add to the appeal of the overall offerings at Shore and student commitment.

“It is our goal to assist students and parents in obtaining the best high school education for their youngsters,” Schnappauf said.
