Mascot Auditions Set for May 2

Monmouth University students will have the opportunity to become West Long Branch's most famous Hawk, as auditions for Shadow the Mascot will be held at the Wilson Auditorium on May 2 at 7:30 p.m.

For many college students, part of the fun of going to games at the school includes cheering loudly for the team from the sidelines, acting as a “12th Man” of sorts during football and trying to use cheers and hand waving to make basketball players on opposing teams miss their free throws.

Well Monmouth students who are big fans of sporting events and want to have a more in-depth experience without putting on a jersey are in luck, as tryouts to be the new Monmouth University Hawk mascot will be taking place on Monday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the Wilson Auditorium.

Those interested in becoming the next “Shadow the Hawk” should get ready for an audition that has three distinct parts. First, students will participate in a skit. Individuals trying out should prepare to act like a mascot at a college sporting event, and should last anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute. Music for these skits is not necessary, but an iPod player will be available for those who choose to bring music with them.

Secondly, candidates must show improvisation with their auditions for Shadow, as there are many different scenarios that a mascot will find itself in over the course of a game. Those trying out will also be asked to showcase a unique walk for Shadow. Candidates are asked to display the personality of Shadow during the portion of this audition.

Also, for this portion of the audition, candidates will actually receive the chance to wear the Shadow costume, that way they can experience what it is like to wear the outfit for an extended period of time.

The session will then conclude with an interview. During this interview, all people trying out for the job will get evaluated on several categories, including personality, fitness, eye contact, facial expressions, enthusiasm and ability to properly answer questions.

Due to the physical nature of the try-outs, candidates are asked to wear comfortable clothing and shoes, that way they can move freely while acting as Shadow.

The people selected to become Shadow for the 2011-2012 year are required to attend UCA Mascot Camp along with all Monmouth University cheerleaders, which will take place from August 10-13.
