Long Branch School District Names New Assistant Superintendent

The Long Branch School District has a new Assistant Superintendent in Alvin Freeman, who was sworn in during Wednesday night's board of of education meeting.

Freeman has served as Lead Principal of Long Branch High School since 2006 and now takes over for Michael Salvatore who has moved on to the position of Superintendent of Schools. Freeman will have a salary of $133,000.

“I am so excited to begin this new chapter in my life,” Freeman said. “I am very appreciative that the Board of Education has the confidence in me and is giving me this wonderful opportunity.”

Freeman, 41, is a native of New Orleans and moved to New Jersey when he was nine years old. He graduated from Middletown South in 1988. In 1993, he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management at Upsala College in East Orange.

Shortly after graduating, Freeman accepted a position as substitute teacher/instructional assistant in the Red Bank Public School System.

“That is when I realized that working with children was my true calling,” Freeman said.

In 1995, he was hired as a fourth grade teacher at the West End School in Long Branch. He was named West End School Teacher of the Year and District Teacher of the Year in 1999.

Before becoming Lead Principal of Long Branch High School, Freeman served as Assistant to the Principal at Long Branch Middle School and later, Assistant Principal of the middle school.

Salvatore said he is looking forward to working with Freeman as both settle into their new roles for 2011-2012 school year.

"(Freeman) has great determination and understanding of the process of enlisting and guiding the talents of instructional leaders,” Salvatore said. “His mission is to challenge the mediocrity.”
