'All Systems Go' for First Day of School in Local Districts

While there was minor flooding and power outages at some local schools, all are on target to open as planned.

Some minor flooding and power outages are not going to keep any local schools from opening as planned in the next week.

in Eatontown briefly lost its power but was up and running as of Monday, said superintendent Scott McCue. Teachers in the district will have a staff in-service day on Thursday and will be joined by students for a single-session day on Friday. Students will return on Tuesday, Sept. 6 for a full day of school.

In Tinton Falls, both the and schools were still without power as of Tuesday afternoon. Board of education president Peter Karavites said the district was on track to begin next week. Students start Thursday, Sept. 8 with a full day of school.

Karavites said there was "minimal water" in any of the three schools and that water issues that arose over the summer during construction at the Swimming River School had been mediated by the contractor so that the structure was able to handle the weekend's abundant rainfall.

"We are all systems go," said Maria Parry, business administrator for . The school sustained neither loss of power nor water damage and Parry said they are on track to open their doors to students on Friday.

in Tinton Falls suffered no storm damage, according to communications director Valerie Francois, and students will start the school year on Wednesday, Sept. 7. Teachers were due to begin on Monday but delayed their start until Tuesday due to the storm.
