Fireworks Display Set To Blast Off

West Long Branch council members approve a resolution that will allow Garden State Fireworks to put on a display on July 4.

There was some great news for fireworks fans of all ages during Wednesday evening’s West Long Branch Borough Council meeting, as the council members approved the contract resolution for a holiday fireworks show that was initially in jeopardy of not being held.

The fireworks celebration will occur at Franklin Lake in West Long Branch on July 4th at dusk. For a while, however, the event was in danger of being cut due to lack of funding.

“We just couldn’t justify spending money for the fireworks show due to the recent wage freezes and budget cuts,” Mayor Janet W. Tucci said.

In recent weeks, however, there have been donations from several local groups, ensuring the fireworks celebration would go on as scheduled. Monmouth University donated $5,000 toward the cost of the fireworks and concert that will follow, and the West Long Branch Policemen’s Benevolent Association donated to the cause, as well.

Once the needed $8,500 was raised for the fireworks celebration, the borough council sent out proposals for running the event to various companies, and Garden State Fireworks responded to the proposal, saying they would take on the event.

According to the resolution, both the special events coordinator and the fire official have both reviewed the submission from Garden State Fireworks and are recommending the borough use this company for the event.

The contract was then agreed upon, and a fireworks display will go off over the borough’s skies on July 4, with a rain date set for July 9.

After the Reign will be performing at the park following the fireworks display.
