City Imposes Curfew For Duration of Hurricane Irene

Curfew will begin at 10 p.m. on Saturday and remain for entirety of storm

The Long Branch Office of Emergency Management has enacted a curfew beginning at 10 p.m. on Saturday through the duration of Hurricane Irene.

The city issued a code red alert at 5:45 p.m., telling residents the storm should reach the area by 10 p.m. or earlier.

No vehicles or pedestrians will be allowed on the streets during the curfew.

This is a very dangerous storm with the worst conditions being overnight hours through midday Sunday," the message stated.

There is a mandatory evacuation for all residents who live from Atlantic Avenue to the Monmouth Beach border.

"Anyone in a mandatory evacuation area should have evacuated by this time," the message stated.

All other residents have been "strongly encouraged" to evacuate, but it is not mandatory.
