Borough Readies for Summer Months

During Wednesday evening's West Long Branch Borough Council meeting, the borough council approved a list of employees for the summer recreation program and talked about upcoming treatments to Franklin Lake Park.

With the hot weather finally here, members of the West Long Branch governing body took time during their meeting on Wednesday evening to get the borough ready for the upcoming summer months. These actions included making sure that Franklin Lake Park is looking as good as ever, and hiring several new staff members for the borough’s summer recreation program.

Councilman John M. Aria was first to address what will soon be going on at Franklin Lake Park. He explained that recently the beautification committee was at the park, planting flowers and getting the park looking great for the upcoming fireworks display.

He then mentioned how this week, the borough would be spraying some areas of Franklin Lake Park with herbicides to make sure that weeds do not grow in certain areas of the park.

“We will make sure there are placards up for the next few weeks, pointing out which sections of the park have been sprayed,” the councilman said.

Councilman Aria has a great deal of expertise in this area, as he is a member of the borough’s Environmental Commission, as well as the Shade Tree Commission.

Following Councilman Aria’s comments on the herbicide treatment at Franklin Lake Park, Mayor Janet Tucci acknowledged the resolution during the meeting which allowed for 10 people to be hired this summer to work for the borough’s summer recreation program.

The individuals who were hired include Director Nick Cammarano, Assistant Director Jeff LaBush, and counselors Jenni Juliano, Mark Costantino, Gina Jelliff, Matt Cosentino, Emily Reiser, Christopher Vaccaro, Jessica Kwok and Alex Cameron.

The board memories unanimously approved this resolution to hire the 2011 summer recreation camp staff, and the list will be formally approved at the borough council’s next meeting, which is set for Wednesday, June 15 at 8 p.m. in Borough Hall.
