Asbury Park Mayor on DOMA Ruling: 'A Victory For America'

The Supreme Court ruled that DOMA is unconstitutional.

The Supreme Court decision to strike down a law blocking benefits for same-sex couples is a "victory for America," according to Asbury Park Mayor Ed Johnson.

"It's a victory for America, it's a victory for the constitution and a victory for the rights of equal protection under the law," Johnson said today. "It recognizes the basic american principle that equal protection under the law has to be afforded to all Americans."

In a 5-4 vote, the court struck down a provision of the Defense of Marriage Act, the law blocking benefits for gay couples, from tax breaks to pension benefits.

Asbury Park has a large gay population, and Johnson said the decision reached today benefits not just Asbury Park residents, but all Americans.

"The story of America has been about expanding rights, responsibilities and opportunities," Johnson said. "This is just another another step and something all Americans should celebrate. This is about protecting the rights of two people love whomever they chose."
