Asbury Avenue Traffic Light Coming for Fox Chase and Park Place Residents

Tinton Falls' borough engineer said an Asbury Avenue light is in the design stages with the county.

Pulling onto Asbury Avenue out of two major townhome communities in Tinton Falls should get a little easier with the addition of a traffic light in the near future.

The light will be accompanied by a road widening project that will add a dedicated left turn lanes into and out of Fox Chase and Park Place from Asbury Avenue (County Route 16), according to Tinton Falls Borough Engineer David Marks.

The county-sponsored project is in the "design stage," according to Marks, at the Oct. 4 Tinton Falls Borough Council meeting. The project is being reviewed by the Monmouth County Engineer’s office, which has obtained the applicable environmental permits from the NJ Department of Environmental Protection, according to Marks.

The improved intersection will have dedicated left-hand turn lanes with protected left-hand turn signals from Asbury Avenue onto Cannonball Drive and Foxchase Drive, according to Marks in an e-mail.  The signal will also have dedicated left hand turn lanes with protected left hand turn signals onto Asbury Avenue from Foxchase Drive and Cannonball Drive, he added. Each leg of the intersection will also have a combined through and right hand turn lane.

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)- accessible curb ramps, pedestrian push buttons and pedestrian crosswalks will be installed across all legs of the intersection for improved access, said Marks.

The county is coordinating right-of-way acquisition from the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, which is an extension of property from Garden State Parkway Exit 102, and potential overhead utility relocations with JCP&L, Verizon and Comcast.  Once the property and utility issues are resolved a project bidding and construction schedule will be established, said Marks.

Donny Christopher, who lives on Equestirian Court, suggested to Marks at the Oct. 4 meeting that developers also consider adding a sign warning trucks to slow down as they approach the new light off of a steep hill on Asbury Avenue. Christopher said the road is heavily traveled by trucks driving towards the Monmouth County Reclamation Center.

Marks said he would bring that issue to the county's attention.
