Wrong-Way Driver Dies In Multi-Vehicle Crash on Garden State Parkway

Another driver is in critical condition.

A multi-vehicle accident caused the death of one person and seriously injured another near Exit 114 on the Garden State Parkway southbound express in Middletown on Saturday afternoon.

Leonard Danduone, 80, of New Providence, was driving northbound in the southbound express lane when he hit a car head-on, causing a large crash with four vehicles involved, according to New Jersey State Police Sgt. Brian Polite. Polite said Danduone, who was driving a white sedan, was taken to Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, and pronounced dead.

The driver he struck head on, Michael Aberback, 37, of Morristown, is in critical condition at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Polite said. Aberback was driving a grey Hyundai.

Polite said other injuries were reported and treated at the scene.

The accident occurred at 1:54 p.m. at mile marker 113, and caused the closure of all three southbound express lanes.

Polite said all three lanes are open, as of 5:10 p.m.

Middletown EMS Assitant Public Information Officer Beth Edwards said the Leonardo, Fairview, Port Monmouth and Lincroft First Aid Squads assisted on the scene. Middletown Fire Company Section 10 and multiple chiefs also responded.

Polite said the accident is still under investigation.
