Woman Indicted on False Police Report Charges

Police say she would drive erratically and then report other drivers to state and local police departments

An Aberdeen woman was indicted by a Monmouth County grand jury Wednesday for allegedly filing and attempting to file multiple false police reports against drivers on the Garden State Parkway in Monmouth County, in the boroughs of Red Bank and Sayreville.

Investigators say Karen Born, 54, filed four false police reports and attempted to file four other police reports with the NJ State Police between May 2010 and June 2012 against drivers on the Parkway in Aberdeen, Matawan, Holmdel, Middletown, Eatontown, Tinton Falls, and Wall. She also allegedly file a false police report with the Red Bank Police Department in May 2012 and with the Sayreville Police Department in Oct. 2010

According to First Assistant Prosecutor Richard Incremona, Born would drive on the Garden State Parkway and slam on her brakes, flicker or turn off her headlights, and drive erratically. She would then allegedly report nearby drivers for "improper actions," such as dangerous driving or for harassing her, to New Jersey State Police. One instance occurred in Sayreville and was reported to the Sayreville Police Department.

"It was found that her accusations were false," Incremona said.

Born is charged with five counts of fourth degree false report to law enforcement, four counts of fourth degree attempted false report to law enforcement, four counts of fourth degree resisting arrest, and one count of fourth degree contempt.

According to Incremona, the contempt of court charge stems from Born's alleged violation of a judicial order banning her from returning to the Holmdel Barracks of the NJ State Police.

A warrant for her arrest was issued with the indictment, Incremona explained. Upon her arrest, bail will be set at $50,000 with no option to post 10 percent cash bond. As a condition of her bail, Born will have be prohibited from returning to the scene and will have to turn in her license, Incremona said.

An indictment does not indicate a conviction, only that the charges may be brought to trial.
