Tinton Falls Holds Active Shooter Drill at Monmouth Regional

The drill was designed to simulate if a shooter was at the high school.

The Tinton Falls Police Department and Office Of Emergency Management simulated how the borough would handle having a "active shooter" at Monmouth Regional High School during a drill on Monday morning.

"Things like this can happen in real life," Tinton Falls Mayor Michael Skudera said. "We want to make sure we are ready in case it ever does."

The drill played out a scenario where a shooter entered the school and injured students and staff members as police were called to the scene.

Crews from the local police, State Police, Red Cross and Monmouth County Sheriff’s Department set up a command center at Tinton Falls Borough Hall to monitor security cameras at the high school while the drill was taking place.

"This is a training day for us and we are taking this very seriously," Tinton Falls Police Chief John Scrivanic said.

The area around the high school was closed off to traffic and students and staff were evacuated from the school. They walked across Tinton Avenue to borough hall and stayed there until the drill was completed.

Skudera said the drill will also help the borough evaluate its procedure in the event of an active shooter at the school.

"We will meet again over the next day to talk about what went right and what went wrong," Skudera said.
