Rumors Untrue: No Incidents Reported in Brick Schools Friday

Doors locked, but just as a precaution in response to the rumors

Contrary to rumors that flew around Brick Friday, no incidents were reported at any township school, Superintendent Dr. Walter Uszenski said.

The district did arrange for an increased police presence districtwide, and all school doors were locked, but just as a precaution in response to the rumors.

"The doors are all locked, we're being proactive, but knock-on-wood, there have been no incidents today," said Uszenski.

By 12:30 p.m., two marked Brick Township Police cars were parked outside of Brick Memorial High School, part of the precautionary presence.

The district received hundreds of calls from concerned parents, and principals put out robo-calls to assure parents that there were no issues or dangers in the schools.

"There have been a lot of rumors, from gun shots to people breaking in," said Uszenski. "None of them are true."

"The truth is, the kids are learning, I visited some schools today and the kids were coming up and wishing me a Merry Christmas," he said. "It's been a calm day."

The rumors come one week after a deadly shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut which left 27 people dead, including 20 children.

Uszenski, at a Board of Education meeting Thursday night, promised an increased police presence at schools Friday and said anyone who caused trouble would be arrested and prosecuted.

We don't need armed police in our schools. This is just another way the towns can soak the tax payers. By the way teachers need to stick to teaching instead of gossiping or trying to teach a kid a lesson that has nothing to do with teaching.

As a retired staff member at B.T.H.S. those doors should be replaced, they will be the problem some day if we are not on our toes.B.T.H.S. needs to have a securty review ...TO MANY DOORS..

Kc Our children will NEVER be completely safe. You cant stop some psyco from killing a big group of people if he wants to. If he doesnt do it at school it will be at the bus stop, or on the way to the bus stop, or the mall, or a movie theater, at a Little League game or the boardwalk or the beach or the park or stop and shop...etc etc etc. youll never have enough armed guards to keep us all safe.

And wouldn't it be great if the helicopters did not find it necessary to constantly text their children throughout the school day! I just don't know how we survived "back in the day" without IMMEDIATELY knowing if Snowflake had a surprise quiz that day, was staying late after school, needed to go to the Nurse, etc. BOE - how about enacting a policy where our middle and high school students actually must keep their cell phones in their lockers?! And, then actually ENFORCE consequences if caught texting in class? My suggestion is to require the parent to come into the office to pick it up if they want the phone back that day. Otherwise, hold it for a set number of days.

bayboat...True...We are not even safe from our School Environment or those who run them. We have plenty of "psychos" in the schools that we can't get rid of either. The school does nothing to get rid of them. You are right not enough armed guards to keep us all safe. Anything can happen anywhere. Ct. Teachers are a different breed than NJ Teachers. So I do feel bad for the Ct. Teachers and the innocent children who were in the middle of the chaos is so unfair and wrong.
