Residents Can Turn in Unused, Expired Medicine This Week

Medicine can be dropped off at West Long Branch Police Department

Residents who are wondering what they can do with their unused or expired medicine can find a solution in West Long Branch this weekend.

Unused or expired medication can be dropped off at headquarters on Saturday, Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Saturday is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) program designed to stop the abuse of prescription drugs.

"Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet," the DEA states on its web site.

Nearly, 4,000 state and local law enforcement agencies throughout the nation participated in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Sept. 25, 2010 and April, 25, 2011. The agencies collected more than 309 tons of pills, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
